🛠️ Using Search Atlas Tools on a Staging Subdomain

If your rebuilt website lives on a staging subdomain (for example, beta.snazzy.solutions) and is set to noindex, you can still use Search Atlas tools to review, audit, and prepare your site for launch. Because the subdomain is noindex, search engines will not crawl or rank it — but Search Atlas crawls your site directly, so noindex tags do not block its analysis.

⚙️ What You Can and Cannot Do on a Staging Subdomain

Understanding these boundaries will help you get the most out of Search Atlas before launch.

  • What works: Site audits, on-page SEO analysis, content reviews, internal link analysis, and OTTO SEO recommendations all function normally on a staging subdomain. Search Atlas crawls your site independently of Google's index.
  • What is limited: Rank tracking and keyword position data rely on live search engine results. A noindex staging subdomain will not appear in search rankings, so rank data will not be available until the site is live on your production domain.
  • Backlink data: A brand-new staging subdomain will have no backlink history. Backlink metrics become meaningful once you launch on your permanent domain.

🚀 Step 1 — Add Your Staging Subdomain as a Project

  1. Log in to Search Atlas and go to the left sidebar.
  2. Go to Home and click Create Project and enter your full staging subdomain URL, for example https://beta.snazzy.solutions.
  3. Complete the setup wizard and save. Search Atlas will begin crawling the subdomain immediately.

Once your staging project is saved, run a full site audit to surface technical and on-page issues before launch.

  1. Open your staging project from Site Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Site Audit section within the project dashboard.
  3. Click Start Audit and wait for the crawl to complete.
  4. Review errors, warnings, and notices. Pay particular attention to broken links, missing meta tags, duplicate content, slow page speed, and crawlability issues that you will want fixed before going live.

Tip: Even though the staging site is noindex, make sure your robots.txt on the staging subdomain does not block Search Atlas's crawler. If it does, the audit will return incomplete results.

  2. Set up Rank Tracker under Left sidebar → Keywords → Rank Tracker for the production domain to begin monitoring keyword positions.
  3. Run a fresh site audit on the production domain post-launch to confirm all staging fixes carried over correctly and that noindex tags have been removed from live pages.
