π What Is Meta Tag Verification?
Before Search Atlas can connect to your website, we need to confirm that you own it. One common method is a meta tag: a short line of code that you add to the head section of your homepage. Our system looks for that line, and when it finds it, your site is verified.
If verification seems stuck, it usually means our system cannot see the tag on your live homepage yet. This is almost always fixable in a few minutes.
β οΈ Why Verification Gets Stuck
These are the most common causes:
- The tag was not saved or published. The change was made in your website editor but never saved or published.
- The tag is in the wrong place. It must sit inside the head section, not in the body of the page.
- The tag was copied incorrectly. Missing characters, extra spaces, or curly quotes can break it.
- An old tag is being used. If you generated a new tag, the old one will not work.
- Caching is showing an old version of your site. Caching plugins, your hosting provider, or a CDN may still serve the page without the tag.
- The tag was added to a different page or version of your domain. For example, it was added to an inner page, or to the www version when your homepage loads without www.
- Our system cannot reach your site. Password protection, maintenance mode, firewalls, or security plugins can block the check.
- Your site redirects the homepage. Some redirects send visitors to a different address that does not contain the tag.
π οΈ Step-by-Step: How to Fix It
- Copy a fresh tag. Go back to the verification step in Search Atlas and copy the meta tag shown there. Copy the entire line without editing it.
- Paste it into the head section of your homepage. Most website platforms have a setting for custom head code or an SEO plugin with a verification field. Paste the tag there, or directly after the opening head tag in your theme.
- Save and publish your changes. Make sure the update is live, not just saved as a draft.
- Clear your cache. Clear the cache in any caching plugin, your hosting dashboard, and your CDN if you use one.
- Check that the tag is live. Open your homepage in a private browser window, right-click the page, and choose View Page Source. Search for the word meta and confirm that your tag appears near the top, inside the head section.
- Return to Search Atlas and verify again. Click the verification button once. Wait a minute or two before trying again, since changes can take a short time to appear.
β Quick Checklist Before You Retry
- The tag is the newest one shown in your Search Atlas account.
- The tag appears in the page source of your live homepage.
- The domain you entered in Search Atlas exactly matches the address that loads in your browser, including whether it uses www or not.
- Your site is not in maintenance mode or behind a password.
- No security tool or firewall is blocking automated visitors.
- You have cleared all caches.
π‘ Tips to Avoid Problems
- If you use an SEO plugin or a site builder, use its built-in verification field instead of editing theme files. This keeps the tag in place after theme updates.
- Do not remove the tag after verification. Keeping it in place helps avoid losing the connection later.
- If you redesign or change themes, check that the tag is still present afterwards.
- If someone else manages your website, send them the tag and ask them to confirm it is live in the head section of your homepage.
