πŸ” Overview

OTTO can deploy on-page SEO changes to the version of your site that visitors see, such as updated title tags, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text, and meta keywords. It does not rewrite the body copy stored in your CMS. Sometimes a deployed change is not what you wanted, for example a name or brand term that reads differently in the live title or heading than in your editor. This article explains why that happens and how to undeploy the change.

❓ Why Does the Live Page Show Different Wording?

In most setups, OTTO applies its changes to the version of the page that visitors see. It does not rewrite the original content stored in your website's backend or CMS. This is why you may see one name or phrase in your editor and a different one on the live page.

A few things can cause wording to change in a way you didn't expect:

  • AI suggestions: OTTO can generate a new title tag, meta description, or heading for a page, and it can add missing keywords or related terms. Those suggestions change the live title, description, or heading. They do not rewrite the body copy in your CMS.
  • Name inside a rewritten field: A person’s name or brand term can change when it is part of a title, heading, or meta description that OTTO rewrites. OTTO does not run a separate name-replacement pass, and its title suggestions are instructed to keep brand and product names.
  • Bulk deployment: If several changes were deployed together, a small edit may have been included without a close review.

πŸ› οΈ How to Revert a Deployed Change

Follow these steps to take one deployed fix off the live page. The button stays labeled Deployed while the fix is live. Click it once to undeploy that fix. Labels can differ slightly if your account uses a white-label name.

  1. Log in to Search Atlas and open OTTO for the website in question.
  2. Find the page that shows the wrong wording. You can search by page URL or browse the list of optimized pages.
  3. In the left sidebar, open Onpage Optimizations and then the category that holds the wording, such as Title Tags, Meta Description, Heading Optimizations, H1 Length, or H2 Length.
  4. Locate the specific change that affects the wording, such as the content or text change that includes the name.
  5. On that row, click the green Deployed pill. It switches back to Deploy and removes only that fix from the live page. Do not use Roll back all unless you want every deployed fix in that category removed. If the page has several items, such as keywords or links, use Undeploy all on that page to remove only that page’s items.
  6. You do not need to redeploy or save. Clicking Deployed is the undeploy. A confirmation dialog appears only for bulk actions such as Roll back all.

βœ… Confirm the Revert Worked

After reverting, check the page to make sure the original text is back.

  1. Wait a few minutes for the update to take effect.
  2. Open the live page in a private or incognito browser window.
  3. Do a hard refresh to bypass your browser's saved copy. On Windows, press Ctrl + F5. On Mac, press Cmd + Shift + R.
  4. If the old wording still appears, clear the cache in your website's caching plugin, hosting platform, or CDN, then check again.

⚠️ Special Case: Names and Brand Terms

People's names, job titles, brand names, product names, and legal wording should usually stay exactly as written. If OTTO changes one of these:

  • Revert the change using the steps above.
  • Check that the correct spelling is used in your backend as well, since it is the source OTTO works from.
  • Review any future suggestions for that page before you deploy them.

πŸ’‘ Tips to Prevent Unwanted Changes

  • Review before you deploy: Read each suggested text change, especially on About, Team, and Contact pages.
  • Deploy in small batches: Smaller deployments make it easier to spot and undo a single problem.
  • Check key pages after deployment: Look at your most important pages on the live site within a day of deploying.
  • Keep a record: Note the page URL and the exact wording you want, so a fix is quick if something changes.

🧰 Troubleshooting

  • The change is still visible after reverting: This is usually caching. Clear your site and browser cache and check again.
  • The change keeps coming back: A new OTTO suggestion may have been deployed for the same page. Check the page's deployed changes list for a newer entry and revert it too.
  • You can't find the change: Compare the live page with your backend text to identify exactly what differs, then look for the matching item in the page's change list.
