π What This Error Means
When you submit a URL or try to publish an article in the Publisher dashboard, the platform checks the page first. If the page contains a noindex instruction in its meta robots tag, the submission is blocked and you see an error.
A noindex tag tells search engines not to include the page in search results. Because the purpose of publishing and submitting a URL is to get it found, a page that asks not to be indexed can't be accepted until the tag is removed.
β Why You May See It
The noindex tag is usually added by your website or CMS, not by Search Atlas. Common causes include:
- The page or post is still set to draft, private, or hidden in your CMS.
- A site-wide setting such as Discourage search engines from indexing this site (WordPress) is turned on.
- An SEO plugin (such as Yoast, Rank Math, or All in One SEO) has the page set to noindex.
- The URL points to a staging, development, or test version of your site.
- Your server sends a noindex instruction in the page's HTTP header (known as an X-Robots-Tag).
- The page template, theme, or a custom code snippet adds a noindex tag.
β Step 1: Confirm the Tag Is on the Page
- Open the URL you are trying to submit in your browser.
- Right-click the page and choose View Page Source.
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) and search for noindex.
- Look for a line similar to meta name=robots content=noindex. If you find it, the tag is the cause of the error.
If you don't find it in the page source, the instruction may be coming from your server header. Ask your web developer or hosting provider to check for an X-Robots-Tag set to noindex.
βοΈ Step 2: Remove the Noindex Setting
The right fix depends on where the tag comes from. Start with the most common options:
- WordPress site-wide setting: Go to Settings, then Reading, and make sure Discourage search engines from indexing this site is unchecked. Save your changes.
- SEO plugin: Open the page or post in the editor, scroll to the SEO plugin section, open the advanced settings, and set the page to allow search engines to show it in results (index).
- Draft or private pages: Change the page status to Published and the visibility to Public.
- Other platforms (Wix, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace): Open the page's SEO settings and turn off the option that hides the page from search engines.
- Custom code or theme: Ask your developer to remove the noindex tag from the page template or header.
π Step 3: Clear the Cache and Re-Check
- Save and update the page in your CMS.
- Clear any caching plugin, CDN, or server cache so the updated page is served.
- Open the page source again and confirm that noindex no longer appears.
- Return to the Publisher dashboard and submit the URL again.
π Step 4: Resubmit in the Publisher Dashboard
- Open the Publisher dashboard.
- Paste the URL or select the article you want to publish.
- Submit it again.
If the error is gone, your submission will go through as normal. Changes can take a few minutes to appear, so wait briefly and try again if the error persists right after your update.
π‘ Tips to Avoid This Error
- Always publish the page on your site before submitting its URL.
- Don't submit URLs from staging or test environments.
- After launching a new site, double-check that search engine visibility is turned on.
- Review your SEO plugin defaults, since some set new pages or certain page types to noindex automatically.
- Make sure you are submitting the exact live URL, including the correct version (https and the right domain).
