🔍 What This Error Means
When you submit a published article for a publisher placement, Search Atlas checks the live page to confirm it is ready to deliver SEO value. If the check fails, the article will not be accepted, even if the page looks fine in your browser.
The two most common reasons are:
- Noindex: the page tells search engines not to include it in their results.
- Missing anchor: the page does not contain the expected link (the anchor text pointing to your target URL).
Because both problems are invisible when you simply read the article, they are easy to miss.
🎯 Why These Checks Exist
A link on a page that search engines cannot index passes little or no value. A page without the agreed link does not fulfil the placement. Validation protects your campaign so you only accept placements that actually work.
✅ Quick Checklist Before You Resubmit
- The article is published and publicly visible, not a draft, preview, or password-protected page.
- The URL you submitted is the final live URL, with no redirects or tracking parameters.
- The page does not contain a noindex directive.
- The article contains a clickable link to your target URL with the correct anchor text.
- The link is part of the page content itself, not added later by a script.
🚫 How to Check and Fix a Noindex Problem
A noindex directive can appear in a few places. Check each one:
- Open the live article in your browser and choose View Page Source.
- Search for the word noindex. If you find it inside a robots meta tag, the page is blocked from indexing.
- Check the page's HTTP headers for an X-Robots-Tag: noindex value. A developer or the site's hosting settings can tell you if this is set.
- Look at the site's SEO plugin or CMS settings. Common causes include a post-level option such as Allow search engines to show this post turned off, or a sitewide setting that discourages search engines.
- Check whether the article sits in a section of the site that is set to noindex by default, such as a staging area, a tag archive, or a category used for sponsored content.
Once the directive is removed, save the change, clear any site cache, and confirm in the page source that noindex is gone before you resubmit.
Note: If the publisher controls the website, you may need to ask them to change the setting. Share the exact URL and tell them the page must be indexable.
🔗 How to Check and Fix a Missing Anchor
If validation says the anchor is missing, the checker could not find the expected link in the page. Work through these points:
- Confirm the link exists. Open the live article and look for the anchor text. Click it to check that it opens your target page.
- Match the anchor text. The wording should match what was agreed for the placement. Small changes in spelling or wording can cause a mismatch.
- Match the destination URL. Check for differences such as http versus https, www versus non-www, or a missing trailing slash.
- Use a real link. The link should be a standard text link in the article body. Links added only by JavaScript, buttons, or images without text may not be detected.
- Check the live version. Some editors save the link in a draft but strip it when the article is published. View the published page, not the editor preview.
- Look for caching. If you just added the link, the public page may still show an older version. Clear the cache and reload.
🔁 How to Resubmit the Article
- Fix the noindex directive, the missing anchor, or both on the live page.
- Reload the live URL in a private browser window to confirm that you see the changes.
- Return to the platform and submit the final live URL again.
- Wait for validation to finish. If it passes, the placement will move forward.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting a draft or preview link instead of the public URL.
- Submitting a URL that redirects to a different page.
- Assuming the page is indexable because it appears in your browser. Noindex is hidden in the code.
- Editing the link wording after the article is live without updating the placement details.
- Resubmitting repeatedly without changing anything. The result will be the same until the page is fixed.
💡 Tips to Prevent This in the Future
- Before submitting, view the page source and search for noindex.
- Always click the link in the live article to confirm it goes to the correct page.
- Share the target URL and exact anchor text with the publisher in writing.
- Ask publishers to confirm the article is set to be indexable before it goes live.
💬 Still Seeing the Error?
If the page is indexable, the anchor is present, and validation still fails, there may be another issue such as a block on the checker or a delay in the page updating. Have the article URL and a short description of what you have already checked ready.
