When you deploy OTTO SEO or other Search Atlas tools on a website, the integration adds a small amount of code (typically a JavaScript snippet served from a Search Atlas domain). By default, that code can reveal which tools power your SEO work. White-labeling lets you mask these references so that anyone inspecting your site code, including clients and competitors, cannot easily identify Search Atlas or OTTO.
This article explains what is visible, what you can change, and the recommended steps to white-label your setup.
👀 What Is Visible by Default
When the OTTO script is installed, two things may expose the product:
- The script source domain — the URL the snippet loads from can contain a recognizable Search Atlas domain.
- Naming references — element IDs, attributes, or comments in the page source that include terms like "searchatlas" or "otto."
White-labeling addresses both by serving the script from your own domain and removing recognizable naming.
🌐 Option 1: Serve the OTTO Script From Your Own Domain (Recommended)
The most effective way to hide product references is to load the OTTO script through a subdomain you control (for example, seo.yourdomain.com) using a CNAME record. Visitors and code inspectors then see only your domain, not Search Atlas.
1️⃣ Step 1: Create a Subdomain CNAME
- Log in to your DNS provider (for example, Cloudflare, GoDaddy, or Namecheap).
- Add a CNAME record for a subdomain such as seo.yourdomain.com.
- Point the CNAME to the white-label target provided in your Search Atlas account settings.
- Save the record and allow time for DNS to propagate (usually minutes, but up to 24 hours).
2️⃣ Step 2: Enable White-Labeling in Search Atlas
- Open your Search Atlas dashboard and go to More Features → Agency Hub (Set up your Agency's White Label).
- Enter the custom subdomain you created.
- Save your changes and wait for the connection to verify.
3️⃣ Step 3: Reinstall or Refresh the Snippet
- Copy the updated OTTO snippet, which will now reference your custom subdomain.
- Replace the existing snippet in your site, tag manager, or CMS.
- Reload your site and confirm the change in the next section.
✏️ Option 2: Adjust Naming References in Your Code
If you manage the snippet placement manually, you can reduce recognizable text in your page source.
- Place the snippet through a tag manager (such as Google Tag Manager) rather than hard-coding it, so the loading logic is less obvious in your raw HTML.
- Avoid adding your own comments or container names that mention the product (for example, do not label a container "OTTO script").
- Do not rename internal IDs or attributes inside the Search Atlas snippet itself. Editing the script's internal code can break functionality and is not supported. Use the white-label domain feature instead, which is the supported way to mask references.
✅ How to Verify White-Labeling Is Working
After making your changes, confirm that product references are masked:
- Open your live website in a browser.
- Right-click and choose View Page Source, or open Developer Tools and check the Network tab.
- Locate the SEO script and confirm it loads from your custom subdomain (for example, seo.yourdomain.com) rather than a Search Atlas domain.
- Search the page source for terms like "searchatlas" or "otto" to confirm they no longer appear.
When checking the Network tab, note that the main snippet is not the only request OTTO makes. Secondary requests — such as the OTTO tracking pixel, some API endpoints, and static assets loaded from static-assets.searchatlas.com — may still reference a Search Atlas domain even after your subdomain is configured. See the limitations below for details.
If the script still loads from a Search Atlas domain, recheck your CNAME record and confirm the updated snippet has been installed.
🎨 White-Labeling the Dashboard and Reports for Clients
If your goal also includes presenting Search Atlas to your own clients under your brand, you can white-label the platform experience:
- Custom domain login: Give clients a branded portal at your own URL.
- Branding: Add your logo, colors, and company name in the white-label settings.
- Reports: Send and schedule reports that display your branding instead of Search Atlas.
These settings are managed in More Features → Agency Hub (Set up your Agency's White Label) alongside the script options.
⚠️ Important Notes and Limitations
- White-labeling hides recognizable references but cannot guarantee that a determined, technical investigator could never identify an underlying tool. It does prevent casual detection through your visible site code.
- Serving the main script from your subdomain does not yet mask every network request. The OTTO tracking pixel and certain API endpoints are not currently obfuscated for white-label accounts, and some static assets are still served from static-assets.searchatlas.com. Obfuscating these endpoints and serving static assets from your white-label domain are improvements currently in development, so full masking of every request may not yet be available on your account. If complete obfuscation is critical, contact support or your account manager to confirm current status.
- Do not modify the contents of the Search Atlas script. Editing it directly can disable features and is not covered by support.
- Some white-label features depend on your plan. If an option is not visible in your dashboard, confirm your subscription includes white-labeling.
- Always test on a staging environment first when possible, then verify on your live site.
🔧 Troubleshooting
The script still shows a Search Atlas domain
Confirm your CNAME record is correct, has finished propagating, and that you installed the updated snippet that references your subdomain.
OTTO features stopped working after white-labeling
Revert to the standard snippet to confirm the tool itself is functioning, then re-add the custom subdomain. If the snippet was edited manually, replace it with a fresh copy from your dashboard.
White-label settings are missing
This usually indicates your current plan does not include white-labeling. Contact your account manager or support to confirm availability.
