🔍 What Happened

On June 25, an API error in the Smart Ads system caused up to 78 responsive search campaigns to be removed from affected accounts. The issue was triggered by a combination of bugs in the Smart Ads infrastructure, including failures in the Smart Ads section endpoint, incorrect campaign count logic that included unsupported campaign types, and an INVALID_CUSTOMER_ID error that occurred when a connected Google Ads account had a missing or empty Customer ID. These issues have since been identified and fully resolved by our engineering team.

✅ What Has Been Fixed

Our team deployed several fixes to address the root causes of this incident:

  • API stability: The Smart Ads section endpoint that was failing and displaying errors to users has been repaired.
  • Campaign count logic: The system no longer incorrectly counts validation campaigns or unsupported campaign types, which was causing unexpected campaign management actions.
  • Customer ID validation: The smart-ads-metrics endpoint no longer throws a 500 error when a Google Ads account has an empty Customer ID field.
  • Account recognition: An issue where Smart Ads showed "Account Not Found" after connecting an active Google Ads account has been resolved.

No further automated removal of campaigns due to these bugs is expected.

🔄 How to Restore Your Campaigns

If your responsive search campaigns were removed, follow these steps to check your current campaign status and rebuild if necessary:

  1. Go to Left sidebar → Ads → Campaigns to view all campaigns currently associated with your account.
  2. Confirm whether your campaigns are listed. If they appear with a paused or inactive status, you may be able to reactivate them directly from this view.
  3. If campaigns are missing entirely, navigate to Left sidebar → Ads → Routines to check whether any automated routines were responsible for campaign creation and whether they can be re-run.
  4. Go to Left sidebar → Ads → Brands and verify that your brand settings and ad assets are still intact, as these are needed to rebuild campaigns.
  5. Use Left sidebar → Ads → Discover to identify high-opportunity keywords and ad groups you may want to include when recreating your campaigns.
  6. Rebuild your responsive search campaigns from Left sidebar → Ads → Campaigns using your saved brand assets and keyword data.

If you previously exported your campaign data or have a record of your ad copy and targeting settings, use those references to speed up the rebuilding process.

🔗 Verify Your Google Ads Connection

Before rebuilding, confirm your Google Ads account is properly connected to avoid errors during campaign creation:

  1. Navigate to Left sidebar → Ads → Campaigns.
  2. Check that your Google Ads account is listed and shows an active connection status — not "Account Not Found."
  3. If the connection appears broken, disconnect and reconnect your Google Ads account. Make sure your Customer ID is correctly populated in your Google Ads settings, as an empty Customer ID was one of the root causes of this incident.

🛡️ How to Prevent This in the Future

While this specific set of bugs has been fixed, here are best practices to protect your campaigns going forward:

  • Export campaign data regularly: Keep a record of your active campaigns, ad copy, and targeting settings so you can quickly restore them if needed.
  • Monitor campaign counts: Periodically check Left sidebar → Ads → Campaigns and Left sidebar → Ads → Reports to confirm expected campaigns are active.
  • Verify account connections: After any platform update or reconnection, confirm your Google Ads Customer ID is correctly linked to avoid API errors.
  • Review Routines: Check Left sidebar → Ads → Routines to ensure no automated routines are configured in a way that could unintentionally affect live campaigns.
