When working inside Content Genius, you may occasionally see a warning message appear on screen. These messages can look alarming, but most of them are recommendations, not errors. This article explains the difference, what each type of message means, and when — if ever — you need to update your settings.
⚠️ Warnings vs. Errors: What's the Difference?
Content Genius uses two distinct types of messages to communicate with you:
- Warning messages — Informational notices that flag something worth your attention. They do not stop you from using the tool and do not require you to change any settings. Think of them as helpful suggestions.
- Error messages — Notices that indicate something has gone wrong and may be blocking an action. These typically require a specific step to resolve, such as re-entering a value or adjusting a configuration.
If the message you see does not prevent you from continuing your work, it is almost certainly a warning, not an error.
📁 The Folder Settings Warning Message
One of the most common warning messages customers ask about is related to folder settings. This message typically appears when Content Genius detects that no default folder has been assigned for saving your content.
Here is what you need to know about this message:
- It is a recommendation. Content Genius is suggesting that you assign a default folder so your documents are organised automatically.
- It does not mean your content is lost, broken, or unsaved.
- It does not prevent you from creating, editing, or publishing content.
- You can dismiss the message and continue working without making any changes.
You will only need to act on this message if you want your content automatically saved to a specific folder by default. If you are happy managing folders manually, no action is required.
🗂️ How to Set a Default Folder (Optional)
If you decide you would like to assign a default folder and clear the warning message, follow these steps:
- In the left sidebar, click Content to expand the section.
- Select the Content Genius document where the warning appeared.
- Locate the folder selector, usually found in the document settings panel or the top toolbar of the editor.
- Choose an existing folder from the dropdown, or create a new one by selecting New Folder.
- Save your selection. The warning message will no longer appear once a default folder is assigned.
This step is entirely optional. Your content is safe and fully functional whether or not a default folder is set.
🧩 Other Common Warning Messages in Content Genius
Below are additional warning messages you may encounter and what they mean:
- "Target keyword not set" — A reminder that you have not entered a primary keyword for this document. Content Genius uses this keyword to power its SEO recommendations. You can add it at any time without losing your work.
- "Word count below recommended threshold" — A suggestion that your content may benefit from additional depth. This is a guideline based on competitive benchmarks, not a hard limit.
- "No content brief linked" — Indicates the document is not connected to a Content Planner brief. You can link one via Left sidebar → Content → Content Planner, but this is optional if you are working without a brief.
- "AI suggestions unavailable" — This message typically appears when an AI generation request cannot be completed. If it persists, refreshing the page or starting a new session usually resolves it. If it continues, contact support using the instructions below.
✅ Quick Reference: Do I Need to Act?
- Message appears but I can still work normally — This is a warning. No action required unless you want to follow the recommendation.
- Message blocks me from completing an action — This is likely an error. Follow any on-screen instructions, or contact support.
- I am unsure which type of message I have — Check whether you can still click, type, or save. If yes, it is a warning.
