🔍 Why Competitor Names Appear in AI Content

When Content Genius generates articles, it draws on broad language patterns to produce relevant, natural-sounding text. Without explicit instructions, the AI may reference well-known brands in your industry — including your direct competitors — as examples, comparisons, or context. This is a common issue, but it is fully preventable using the Brand Vault exclusion feature built into Content Genius.

🗄️ What Is Brand Vault?

Brand Vault is a centralised settings area where you define words and phrases that the AI should never include in your generated content. By marking competitor names and related terms as excluding terms, you instruct the AI to filter them out before any article is created. This setting applies globally across all content you generate in Content Genius.

🛠️ How to Add Competitor Names as Excluding Terms

  1. In the left sidebar, click the apps-grid icon for More Features and select Brand Vault.
  2. In Brand Vault, find the Excluding Terms field. This is where you list words and phrases the AI will avoid.
  3. Type each competitor name or related term you want to block. Add one term at a time and confirm each entry before adding the next.
  4. Include variations of each competitor name — for example, abbreviations, product names, or common misspellings — so the AI avoids all forms of the term.
  5. Save your changes. Your excluding terms are now active and will apply to all future AI-generated content.

✏️ Generating an Article After Setting Excluding Terms

  1. From the left sidebar, go to Content → Content Genius.
  2. Click Generate or select Write with AI in Bulk, Write it yourself, or Write an article depending on your workflow.
  3. Complete your topic, keyword, and outline inputs as normal.
  4. The AI will generate your article while automatically omitting any terms listed in your Brand Vault exclusion list.
  5. Review the draft to confirm no competitor names appear. If any slipped through, add the missed variation to your excluding terms list and regenerate.

💡 Best Practices for Competitor Exclusion

  • Be thorough with variations. Add full brand names, shortened names, product names, and any branded terms associated with each competitor.
  • Update Brand Vault regularly. If a new competitor enters your market, add their name to your excluding terms list before generating content about related topics.
  • Review generated content before publishing. Brand Vault significantly reduces unwanted references, but a final review ensures nothing was missed.
  • Use excluding terms for other sensitive language too. Brand Vault is not limited to competitor names — you can also exclude phrases that do not align with your brand tone or messaging.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does Brand Vault apply retroactively to already-generated content?
No. Excluding terms only affect content generated after you save your settings. To clean up existing articles, you will need to edit them manually or regenerate the content.

Will excluding terms affect content quality or length?
No. The AI adjusts its output to avoid the excluded terms without reducing the quality, depth, or length of the article.

Can I add an entire competitor domain as an excluding term?
Brand Vault works best with individual words and short phrases. Enter the competitor's brand name rather than a full URL for the most reliable results.

Is Brand Vault available on all Content Genius plans?
Brand Vault is part of the Content Genius feature set. If you do not see the Brand Vault section in your account, your current plan may not include it. Contact support to confirm your plan details.
