🧭 Overview

You don't need to share your Search Atlas login credentials to have a developer install the WordPress plugin and activate the OTTO pixel. Instead, you can provide two pieces of information — your API key and your OTTO UUID — which give the developer exactly what they need, nothing more.

🔑 What You Need to Share With Your Developer

Your developer only needs the following two values to complete the installation:

  • Search Atlas API Key — authenticates the plugin connection to your account.
  • OTTO UUID — links the OTTO pixel to your specific OTTO project.

Neither value gives access to your account dashboard, billing information, or login credentials. They are safe to share with a trusted third-party developer.

📋 Step 1: Find Your Search Atlas API Key

  1. Log in to your Search Atlas account.
  2. Open the Account Menu and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to the API Keys page.
  4. Copy your API Key and send it to your developer securely (for example, via an encrypted message or a password manager share link).

🧩 Step 2: Find Your OTTO UUID

  1. From your Search Atlas dashboard, open the OTTO section.
  2. Select the OTTO project associated with the website where the plugin will be installed.
  3. Locate the OTTO UUID displayed on the project overview or settings page.
  4. Copy the UUID and share it with your developer alongside the API key.

Tip: If you have not yet created an OTTO project for the website, create one now before proceeding. Each website requires its own OTTO project and UUID.

🛠️ Step 3: Developer Installs the WordPress Plugin

Share the following instructions with your developer. They do not need access to your Search Atlas account at any point.

  1. Log in to the WordPress admin dashboard for the website.
  2. Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and upload the Search Atlas plugin ZIP file provided by Search Atlas.
  3. Activate the plugin.
  4. Open the plugin settings page inside WordPress by navigating to Search Atlas → Settings (General tab).
  5. Enter the API Key you provided in the designated field.
  6. Enter the OTTO UUID you provided in the OTTO Pixel UUID field.
  7. Save the settings. The plugin will verify the connection and activate the OTTO pixel automatically.

✅ Step 4: Verify the Installation

Once your developer confirms the plugin is configured, verify the connection from your side:

  1. Return to the OTTO section in Search Atlas.
  2. Open the relevant OTTO project.
  3. Check that the pixel status shows as Active or Connected.
  4. If the status does not update within a few minutes, ask your developer to confirm the API key and UUID were entered without extra spaces or characters.

🔒 Security Best Practices

  • Never share your Search Atlas account password or the email address used to log in.
  • Share the API key and UUID through a secure channel, such as a password manager's share feature, rather than plain email or chat.
  • If you believe your API key has been exposed to unintended parties, regenerate it immediately from Account Menu → Settings → API Keys and update the WordPress plugin settings with the new key.
  • Each OTTO UUID is project-specific and does not provide access to other projects or account data.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can the developer see my Search Atlas data using the API key?
The API key is used by the WordPress plugin to send data to Search Atlas, not to browse your account. However, treat it like a password — share it only with people you trust and regenerate it if needed.

Do I need to create a separate Search Atlas account for my developer?
No. The API key and UUID workflow is specifically designed to avoid this. Your developer needs no Search Atlas account to install and configure the plugin.

What if I manage multiple websites?
Each website needs its own OTTO project and UUID. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each site. The same API key can be used across all of them.
