This article covers how to research and assign a transactional primary keyword to each of your product pages — so every page is optimized for buyers who are ready to convert, not just browse. If you've been unsure which keyword to target or how to confirm your choice is the right fit, follow the guidance below.
🛠️ What Are Transactional Keywords?
Transactional keywords signal purchase intent. Look for terms that include words like buy, order, get, cheap, deal, price, shop, or the product name paired with a specific model, size, or use case (e.g., "buy noise-cancelling headphones" or "affordable standing desk under $300").
🛠️ General Steps to Identify and Assign a Primary Keyword
- Research seed terms. Start with your product name or category as a seed term inside the Keyword Research tool in Search Atlas. Review the keyword suggestions returned for your seed.
- Evaluate intent and volume. Prioritize keywords that reflect clear purchase intent alongside meaningful monthly search volume for your niche. Also consider keyword difficulty relative to your domain authority — choose a term your site can realistically compete for.
- Select one primary keyword per product page. Choose a single, focused transactional keyword for each page — do not assign the same keyword to multiple pages. Keyword cannibalization (two pages competing for the same term) will hurt both pages' rankings.
- Assign the keyword to your page. Once you have selected your transactional keyword, apply it as the primary keyword for that product page within your Search Atlas project. Make sure it appears naturally in the page title, H1 heading, meta description, and at least once in the opening paragraph of the page body.
- Validate with competitor research. Review the top-ranking pages for your chosen keyword using Search Atlas's backlink and site research tools. Confirm that ranking pages are actual product or category pages — not blog posts or informational guides — which validates that your product page is the right format to compete.
✅ How to Confirm It Worked
- After assigning the keyword, verify within your Search Atlas project that your chosen transactional keyword is recorded as the primary keyword for that page.
- Check that the keyword appears in the key on-page locations: title tag, H1, meta description, and the opening paragraph.
- Monitor the page's keyword rankings over the following weeks to confirm the page is being indexed and ranked for the target term.
