🔍 Rank Tracker Versus Search Console Rankings

Last updated on Oct 29, 2026

📊 How the two reports differ

Rank Tracker and Google Search Console both talk about rankings, but they measure different things. Rank Tracker checks the live search results for keywords you choose, from a set location and device, on a schedule. Search Console reports how Google actually showed your site to real searchers. Its position is an average across impressions, dates, pages, and devices, not one snapshot.

A city check in Rank Tracker, such as Harrisonburg, will not match a country-level average in Search Console. Personal results, the local map pack, and ads can also change what each source shows.

🛠️ Why a project shows no keyword performance

An empty or flat Rank Tracker project usually means tracking has not produced a usable result yet. Check these items before comparing it with Search Console:

  • Keywords added: Only keywords in the project are checked. Search Console queries do not appear automatically.
  • Correct site: The project domain must match the site you expect to find, including the right host.
  • First update finished: A new project stays blank until the first rank check completes.
  • Location and device: A keyword can rank nationally but not from the city or device you selected.
  • Date range: Search Console can show history while Rank Tracker only has data after tracking started.

📍 Why a keyword looks unranked in a city

If a phrase such as a brand name shows no rank in Harrisonburg, the checker searched as if it were in that area and did not find your domain inside the results it stores. That does not always mean the site never ranks. It can rank in other cities, on another device, or only some of the time.

Search Console may still list the query because someone, somewhere, saw your page. Its average position blends those impressions. It cannot prove the exact position for one city at one moment.

🔎 How deep tracking goes

Rank Tracker reports a position only when your site appears within the result depth saved for that project. If the view or setting stops at the top 20, a keyword at position 21 or lower looks unranked even though it has a deeper position. Search Console can show an average beyond 20 because it is not limited to that snapshot.

To see whether a keyword is only outside the current depth, open the keyword settings and raise the tracked depth if your project allows it, then wait for the next update. Compare the same keyword, location, and device. Do not expect the new number to equal the Search Console average.

✅ How to compare them fairly

  1. Use the same keyword spelling in both tools.
  2. Match the closest location. Use city tracking for local intent and Search Console country data only as context.
  3. Match the device, such as mobile or desktop.
  4. Read Rank Tracker as the latest checked position and Search Console as an average over its date range.
  5. Treat a blank rank as outside the tracked depth or not found in that check, not as proof the page has no visibility.

💬 When to contact support

If keywords are added, the domain and city are correct, and a completed update still shows no performance, the project may need a manual review. If you need further assistance, open the chat widget in the bottom-right corner of the platform and type human teammate to be instantly connected with a member of our team.
