🔍 Overview
When approving outlinks in Wildfire, you may encounter this error message: "There is already an approved backlink in the opposite direction." This can be confusing because the conflicting domain may not appear anywhere in your visible backlinks list. This article explains what causes this error and the steps you can take to resolve it.
💡 What This Error Means
Wildfire prevents circular or duplicate link relationships between domains. The error means that a backlink from the target domain pointing back to your domain has already been approved in the system — even if it is not currently visible in your active backlinks list. This is a validation rule designed to protect the integrity of your link network, not a system malfunction.
Common reasons the conflicting backlink may not be visible to you include:
- The backlink was approved in a previous campaign that is now inactive or archived.
- The link was approved by a different team member under the same account.
- The backlink exists in the system database but has not yet been reflected in your current filtered view.
- A previous approval was made and the live link was later removed from the target site, but the system record was not cleared.
🛠️ How to Investigate the Conflict
- Go to More Features → Backlinks → Backlink Research to view all backlinks associated with your domain.
- Use the search or filter options to look up the specific domain mentioned in the error. Check for any record of a link from that domain — including older or low-authority entries.
- Navigate to More Features → Backlinks → Link Gap Analysis to cross-reference the domain against your competitors and confirm whether a reverse link relationship exists.
- Go to Authority → Campaigns in the left sidebar and review both active and past campaigns. Look for any outlink or backlink approvals involving the conflicting domain.
- Check Authority → Inbox and Authority → Sent for any prior outreach to or from the domain in question. An approved exchange recorded in Sent history can trigger this error.
✅ How to Resolve the Error
Once you have identified the source of the conflict, you have two options depending on your goal:
- If the reverse backlink is no longer active or desired: Locate the original approved backlink record and remove or revoke the approval. Once the system no longer sees an active approved link in the opposite direction, you should be able to approve the new outlink without the error.
- If you cannot locate the conflicting record yourself: The conflict may exist at the database level and require a manual review. In this case, do not attempt to re-submit the approval repeatedly, as this will not resolve the underlying record.
⚠️ Important Notes
- This error is a deliberate system safeguard, not a bug. It prevents mutual linking arrangements that can negatively impact your SEO profile.
- Approving links in both directions between the same two domains is flagged as a reciprocal link exchange, which search engines may discount or penalise.
- If the domain appears clean in all your views but the error persists, the conflict record may need to be cleared by the Search Atlas support team.
