This article covers Backlink Analysis, Site Explorer, referring domains, disavow exports, anchor text reporting, competitor backlink intelligence, and backlink verification behavior inside Search Atlas.
⚠️ Error 1: Backlink report takes very long to load
What's happening:
The Backlink service and its telemetry layer both experience connectivity timeouts, slowing data delivery.
Steps to try:
- Wait up to 60 seconds for the report to load — the service is functioning but under load
- If data still doesn't appear, refresh the page
⚠️ Error 2: New backlinks not appearing even after 48 hours
What's happening:
Backlink discovery depends on crawler schedules. Not all backlinks are discovered immediately.
Steps to try:
- Go to Left Sidebar → Site Metrics → Backlinks → Type your domain and request a fresh crawl
- New backlinks from very new referring domains may take 7–14 days to appear
⚠️ Error 3: Site Explorer competitor data is empty
What's happening:
Site Explorer pulls data from multiple external sources. If one source is unavailable, some competitor metrics may be missing.
Steps to try:
- Refresh the page after 5 minutes
- Try a different competitor domain to confirm if the issue is specific to that domain or broader
⚠️ Error 4: Backlink database shows a connection error message
What's happening:
The Backlink service database occasionally drops connections during maintenance windows.
Steps to try:
- Reload the page — the connection resets automatically
- If the error persists for more than 10 minutes, the team has been alerted and is actively resolving it
⚠️ Error 5: Anchor text distribution chart is blank
What's happening:
Anchor text requires a minimum number of backlinks to render the distribution chart (at least 10).
Steps to try:
- If your domain has fewer than 10 indexed backlinks, the chart will remain blank
- Try adding your domain to the Indexer via Left Sidebar → Authority → Indexer to help increase crawled backlink count
⚠️ Error 6: Disavow file download is empty
What's happening:
The disavow feature requires you to first flag backlinks as "toxic" or "disavow" before the file generates content.
Steps to try:
- In the Backlinks report, use the filter to show Toxic Links
- Select the links you want to disavow and mark them
- Then download the disavow file — it will now include the flagged links
⚠️ Error 7: Referring domains count differs from other SEO tools
What's happening:
Each SEO tool uses its own crawler database. Discrepancies of 10–30% between tools are normal.
Steps to try:
- Search Atlas uses its own backlink index alongside SEMrush data
- For the most comprehensive view, cross-reference with Left Sidebar → Site Metrics → Backlinks
⚠️ Error 8: Lost backlinks section shows backlinks that are still live
What's happening:
Lost backlink detection runs on a schedule. There can be a 48–72 hour lag between a link going live/offline and the status updating.
Steps to try:
- Click Verify next to any backlink to trigger an on-demand check
- Allow a few minutes for the verification to complete
Most backlink analysis issues are not caused by missing data or broken reports.
They are usually related to:
- crawler scheduling delays
- third-party source synchronization
- temporary database connectivity interruptions
- backlink verification lag
- or differences between SEO crawler ecosystems
Because backlink intelligence depends on continuous large-scale crawling across the web, delays and discrepancies between tools are expected industry-wide.
👉 The most reliable strategy is to:
- focus on backlink trends over time
- monitor referring domains instead of raw link counts
- allow sufficient crawl time for new links
- and use multiple backlink sources for validation
