🔍 Overview
Two concerns often arise together when customers begin using WILDFIRE: the backlink count appearing lower than expected, and reporting dashboards showing metrics highlighted in red. This article explains both issues and what steps you can take to address them.
🔗 Why Your WILDFIRE Backlink Count May Not Match Your Outbound Links
A common point of confusion is the difference between outbound links you create and backlinks counted by WILDFIRE. These are not the same thing, and understanding the distinction is essential.
- Outbound links are the links you place pointing away from your site as part of a WILDFIRE campaign.
- WILDFIRE backlinks are inbound links pointing back to your site that have been verified and indexed.
Completing outbound links does not automatically generate an equivalent number of backlinks to your domain. Backlinks are earned based on participation and eligibility within the network — not on a one-to-one basis with the links you place outbound.
Your backlink count will grow incrementally as other participants in the network link back to your content. The rate at which this happens depends on several factors:
- The quality and relevance of your published content
- How recently your outbound links were placed and crawled
- The crawl and indexing schedule of third-party search engines
Backlink acquisition through WILDFIRE is a gradual process. Seeing fewer verified backlinks than outbound links placed is expected, particularly at early stages, and does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account.
📊 Why Your Reporting Metrics May Appear in Red
When you first connect a site to Search Atlas or launch a new campaign, the platform begins collecting fresh baseline data. During this initialisation period, metrics that were previously unmeasured — or measured on a different platform — will often display as declining or flagged in red.
This does not necessarily mean your SEO performance has worsened. Here is what is actually happening:
- Baseline establishment: Search Atlas needs several data cycles to establish accurate benchmarks for your domain. Early comparisons can appear negative simply because there is limited prior data to compare against.
- Data source differences: Metrics from a previous tool will not align exactly with Search Atlas data. Rankings, backlink counts, and visibility scores are calculated differently across platforms, so a drop seen in Search Atlas may reflect a measurement difference rather than an actual ranking loss.
- Crawl lag: Newly indexed pages, recently built backlinks, and freshly optimised content may not yet be reflected in the platform's reporting. Allow additional time for data to update before drawing conclusions about performance trends.
If red metrics persist well beyond the initial setup period and you believe they reflect a genuine issue rather than a data-collection artefact, review your campaign settings and confirm that your site is properly connected and verified within Search Atlas.
