Overview

If OTTO is not recognizing your pixel after installing it on a Drupal site, you are not alone. Drupal's caching layers, module conflicts, and theme structure can all interfere with pixel detection. This guide walks you through the most common areas to check when troubleshooting a pixel that is not being recognized.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following ready before troubleshooting:

  • Admin access to your Drupal site
  • Your OTTO pixel code, available inside your Search Atlas account
  • Access to your Drupal theme files or a module capable of injecting code into the page head

Step 1 — Confirm Your Pixel Code Is Correct

Start by verifying you are using the right pixel code for your site.

  1. Log in to Search Atlas and locate your OTTO pixel snippet. It should be the complete script tag assigned to your specific site.
  2. Copy the code fresh — do not rely on a previously saved copy that may be outdated.

Step 2 — Place the Pixel Directly in the HTML Head

A reliable method on Drupal is injecting the pixel code directly into the <head> section of your base theme, bypassing any third-party tag manager.

  1. In your Drupal admin panel, navigate to your active theme's template files.
  2. Open the base HTML template file for your theme.
  3. Paste your OTTO pixel code immediately after the opening <head> tag.
  4. Save the file.

Important: If you previously installed the pixel through Google Tag Manager (GTM), consider removing it from GTM and placing it directly in the template instead. GTM loads asynchronously and may be affected by certain Drupal performance modules, which can cause detection failures.

Step 3 — Clear All Drupal Caches

Drupal aggressively caches page output, so changes to templates may not appear until caches are fully cleared.

  1. Navigate to your Drupal admin panel and clear all site caches using the available cache-clearing option in your configuration settings.
  2. If your hosting environment supports command-line tools, a full cache rebuild from the command line can ensure all layers are cleared.
  3. If your site uses a CDN, purge the CDN cache as well to ensure visitors receive the updated page.

Step 4 — Verify the Pixel Is Live on the Page

After clearing caches, confirm the pixel is actually rendering in the browser.

  1. Open your website in a browser and navigate to any page.
  2. Right-click and select View Page Source.
  3. Use Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on Mac) to search for a unique string from your pixel code.
  4. If the code appears in the source, the pixel is present on the page and OTTO should be able to detect it. If it does not appear, revisit Steps 1–3 above.
