🔍 What This Guide Covers

If your website is built with plain HTML files — no WordPress, no Shopify, no page builder — you'll need to manually paste the OTTO script into your HTML code. This guide walks you through exactly how to do that, what to watch out for, and how to verify the installation worked.

⚙️ Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following ready before starting:

  • Access to your HTML source files — via a code editor (VS Code, Notepad++, etc.) or your hosting file manager (e.g., cPanel File Manager, FTP client like FileZilla).
  • Your OTTO script snippet — retrieved from inside the Search Atlas platform (see step below).
  • Ability to save and re-upload files to your web server or hosting account.

📋 Step 1: Copy Your OTTO Script Snippet

  1. Log in to Search Atlas.
  2. Navigate to the OTTO SEO section of the platform.
  3. Locate the site you want to activate and open it.
  4. Follow the on-screen setup until you reach the Install Script step.
  5. Copy your unique OTTO script snippet to your clipboard. It will look similar to this: .

📝 Step 2: Open Your HTML File

  1. Open your website's root HTML file. For most static sites this is index.html. If your site has multiple pages, you will need to add the script to every page where you want OTTO to run.
  2. Use your preferred code editor or your hosting control panel's built-in file manager to open the file for editing.

✂️ Step 3: Paste the Script in the Section

  1. Inside your HTML file, locate the opening tag near the top of the document.
  2. Paste the OTTO script snippet just before the closing tag. Placing it here ensures the script loads on every page visit without blocking your visible content.
  3. Your code should look like this when done correctly: the closing tag should appear immediately after your pasted OTTO script.
  4. Save the file.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not paste the script inside the tag. The script must live in the section to function correctly.
  • Do not add the script more than once per page. Duplicate script tags can cause tracking conflicts and may interfere with OTTO's optimisation engine.
  • Do not alter the script contents. Copy and paste the snippet exactly as provided — do not modify any URLs, IDs, or attributes inside it.
  • Multi-page sites: If your static site has multiple HTML files (about.html, contact.html, etc.), each file needs the script added individually.
