🚀 What Happens After You Activate OTTO?
When you activate OTTO for a website, the platform immediately begins an initial crawl of that site. This crawl collects the data OTTO needs to start identifying and deploying SEO optimizations. Understanding this process helps you know exactly where things stand and what to expect next.
Activation is a two-part process: confirming OTTO is active and waiting for the initial crawl to complete. Both steps are visible directly inside the platform.
✅ How to Confirm OTTO Is Successfully Activated
- In the left sidebar, click OTTO SEO. This opens the OTTO dashboard at /seo-automation-v3.
- At the top of the page, locate the website selector and choose the domain you want to check (for example, herculesmovingsolutions.com or a1appliance-home-services.com).
- Look for the OTTO Status indicator near the top of the dashboard. A green Active badge confirms that OTTO has been successfully enabled for that domain.
- If the badge shows Inactive or Pending, OTTO has not yet completed activation. See the troubleshooting section below.
🔍 How to Check Your Initial Crawl Status

With your domain selected in the OTTO dashboard, scroll down to the Site Crawl or Crawl Status section.

You will see one of the following states:
- Crawl In Progress — OTTO is actively scanning your site. No action is needed; simply wait for it to finish.
- Crawl Complete — The crawl has finished and OTTO is ready to generate and deploy optimizations.
- Crawl Queued — Your site is in line to be crawled. This is normal immediately after activation.
- Crawl Failed — An issue prevented the crawl from completing. See the troubleshooting section below.

A progress indicator or percentage may appear while the crawl is running. You do not need to keep the page open; OTTO continues crawling in the background.
⏱️ How Long Does the Initial Crawl Take?
Crawl duration depends on the size and complexity of the website being scanned.
- Small sites (under 50 pages): typically 5–20 minutes.
- Medium sites (50–500 pages): typically 20–60 minutes.
- Large sites (500+ pages): can take 1–3 hours or longer.
These are estimated ranges. Factors such as server response time, page load speed, and platform queue volume can extend these windows. If your crawl has been running for significantly longer than the range above for your site size, see the troubleshooting section.
📋 What to Do After the Crawl Completes
- Return to the OTTO dashboard via OTTO SEO in the left sidebar.
- Select your domain and confirm the crawl status shows Crawl Complete.
- OTTO will now display a list of identified SEO opportunities and recommended optimizations across categories such as on-page content, schema markup, internal linking, and more.
- Review the suggested optimizations. You can choose to approve individual items or enable auto-deploy to let OTTO apply changes automatically.
- Monitor the OTTO SEO → Site Audit → Overview (Website Overview) page over the following days — the Site Health Changes, All Page Changes, and Total Issue Changes sections — to track what OTTO has deployed and the resulting impact on your SEO performance.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Common Activation Issues
- Status shows Inactive after activation: Refresh the page and wait two to three minutes. If the status does not update, try deactivating and reactivating OTTO for that domain.
- Crawl has been queued for more than 30 minutes: This can occur during periods of high platform demand. Wait an additional 15–30 minutes before taking action.
- Crawl Failed status: This is often caused by a misconfigured robots.txt file blocking the crawler, or the site being temporarily unavailable. Verify your site is live and accessible, then restart the crawl from the dashboard.
- Cannot find your domain in the dashboard: Confirm the site has been added to your Search Atlas account under the correct workspace before attempting OTTO activation.
