Deployed schema markup in OTTO and now want to undo it? This article explains how to roll back schema safely, what to check before you delete anything, how schema supports Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and how to run a new audit to confirm your changes.
🔍 What Is a Schema Rollback?
A schema rollback means removing structured data that OTTO has deployed to your pages, so it no longer appears in your site's code. People usually do this when:
- The schema contains incorrect or outdated information (for example, wrong prices, hours, or addresses).
- A page has changed and the schema no longer matches the visible content.
- You want to test how a page performs with and without schema.
- Another plugin or tool is already adding the same schema and you want to avoid duplicates.
❓ Should I Click Delete?
Deleting a schema and rolling back its deployment are different actions. Rollback preserves the schema for reuse; deletion removes an eligible schema from the active OTTO list.
- Rolling back stops OTTO from deploying the selected schema or schema changes. Schema already present on your website independently of OTTO may remain and must be changed at its original source.
- Delete Schema removes an eligible schema from your active OTTO list. There is no user-facing undo for this action, so you may need to create a new schema later. FOUND schemas cannot be deleted in OTTO. Source:

In the schema preview, click the active Deployed button to roll back deployment. For schemas deployed with validation warnings, OTTO displays an additional Undo Deployment confirmation. 📝 How to Remove Schema Deployments
- Log in to Search Atlas and open the project for the site you want to change.
- Go to OTTO SEO and open the schema section for that project.
- Find the schema deployment you want to remove. You can usually identify it by the page URL and the schema type (such as Organization, FAQ, Product, or LocalBusiness).
- Find the deployed schema, open its preview, and click Deployed to roll back its deployment while retaining the schema in OTTO. Do not choose Delete Schema if you only want to stop deployment. Source:
customer-frontend/src/modules/otto/v3/overview/body/issuesTable/baseModels/schema/components/schemaDrawer/index.tsx:1043–1080. - Confirm the action when prompted.
- Repeat for any other pages where you want to remove schema.
Tip: If you only want to fix a mistake, editing the schema and redeploying it is often faster than removing it altogether.
⏱️ How Long Until the Change Shows Up?
After you remove a deployment, the change may not appear instantly. Several things can delay it:
- Your site cache: Caching plugins or a CDN may keep serving the old version of the page. Clear your cache after removing schema.
- Search engine recrawling: Google and other search engines need to revisit the page before they update what they show. This can take days or longer.
- Your browser: Try a private window or a hard refresh when checking the page.
✅ How to Confirm the Schema Is Gone
- Clear your site cache and any CDN cache.
- Open the page in a private browser window.
- View the page source and search for application/ld+json. If the OTTO schema was removed, the related block should no longer appear.
- You can also paste the page URL into a structured data testing tool, such as Google's Rich Results Test, to see which schema is still detected.
If schema still appears, it may be coming from your theme, another plugin, or a different tool rather than OTTO.
💡 How Schema Supports AEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about helping search engines and AI-driven answer tools understand your content and present it accurately. Schema markup helps by labeling key details on a page, such as who you are, what you offer, and which questions you answer.
Keep these best practices in mind:
- Match your visible content. Schema should describe what people can actually see on the page.
- Keep it current. Update schema when prices, services, hours, or FAQs change.
- Avoid duplicates. Only one source should add the same schema type to a page.
- Use relevant types. FAQ, Organization, Product, Article, and LocalBusiness are common choices, but only use those that fit the page.
Schema helps search engines interpret your content, but it does not guarantee rich results or placement in AI answers. Removing schema is a valid choice if it is inaccurate or does not fit the page.
📊 Running a New Audit or Report
After you roll back or change schema, run a fresh audit so you can see the current state of your pages.
- Open your project in Search Atlas.
- Go to the audit or reporting tool you normally use for site health.
- Start a new audit for the site or the specific pages you changed.
- Wait for it to finish, then review the structured data and on-page results.
- Compare the new results with your previous report to confirm the schema changes are reflected.
If the new report still shows old schema, wait for your cache to clear and run the audit again.
🧭 Troubleshooting
- I removed schema but it is still on my page: Clear your cache and check whether another plugin or theme is adding it.
- I deleted something by mistake: You can usually recreate or regenerate schema in OTTO. Let our team know if you need help restoring it.
- The audit still shows errors: Run a new audit after caching has cleared, then review any remaining issues.
- I cannot find the remove option: The layout may differ for your project, so reach out using the chat widget and share a screenshot.
