OTTO is built to automate on-page SEO improvements, but you always stay in control. If you want to review AI-generated changes before they are applied to your website, you can temporarily pause OTTO, inspect all recommendations, and selectively re-enable automation when you're ready.
This guide explains exactly how to do that, step by step.
⏸️ When should you pause OTTO?
Pausing (disengaging) OTTO is useful when:
- 🧐 You want to review SEO changes before publishing
- ✋ You need to approve or reject specific title, meta, or heading updates
- 👥 You're validating changes with a client or internal team
- ⚙️ You want to temporarily stop automation while making manual edits
💡 Note on terminology: Pausing OTTO is done by setting it to Disengaged — the terms Pause and Disengage mean the same thing throughout this guide and in the product.
⚠️ Important
Disengaging OTTO does not revert, remove, or delete anything.
It simply pauses automated publishing.
If the OTTO status shows Engaged but no changes are being deployed after 10–15 minutes, or shows Disengaged but changes are still being pushed to your site, this indicates a stuck backend task on our side (the UI toggle changed state but the backend job did not complete). This is a known issue. Contact support and include the following so they can resolve it quickly: your project name, the domain, the toggle state shown in the UI, and the observed behavior (e.g., "toggle shows Engaged but no deployments after 20 minutes").
⚠️ Website Studio compatibility: If your site is built with Search Atlas Website Studio, OTTO on-page changes (meta tags, title tags, etc.) will not deploy correctly through manual script installation. Adding the OTTO pixel script tag manually inside Website Studio is not sufficient — the platform requires either a CMS connector or a properly configured Cloudflare Worker for deployments to work. We strongly recommend contacting support before attempting any manual installation on a Website Studio site, so we can set up the correct deployment path for you. If changes appear deployed in OTTO but are not reflected on your live site, contact support.
🔄 Step 1: Disengage OTTO (Pause Automation)
- Go to Left Sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites (SEO Automation)
- Select the site you want to manage
- At the top of the site overview, locate the OTTO Toggle
- Toggle OTTO to Disengaged
When OTTO is disengaged:
- 🚫 No new on-page changes are published
- 👀 All recommendations remain visible
- ✍️ You can freely review and configure suggested updates
This is a safe review state, not an error.
📍 Step 2: Navigate to On-Page Recommendations
Continuing from Step 1 (you should already be on the site you selected under All Sites), follow this exact path within that site:

🎛️ Step 3: Review and Control Individual Changes
Inside Onpage Audit , you can approve or reject changes one-by-one — you do not have to re-engage OTTO wholesale. Use the per-item Enable/Disable controls described below to choose exactly which title, meta, or heading updates should be published when OTTO is re-engaged. 🔎 Filter by issue type (Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, Headings, etc.) 👁️ Compare Original content vs OTTO Suggested Fix ✅ Enable or ❌ disable recommendations at: Category level (for example, all Title Tag issues) Individual page level (such as your homepage) ℹ️ About supporting content suggestions: OTTO may suggest adding supporting content such as keyword lists or FAQ sections. This content is contextually relevant to the page, is visible to both users and search engines, and is designed to improve SEO without affecting the visual design of your page. It is not hidden using deceptive techniques (such as display:none keyword stuffing) and is not considered black-hat SEO, because it does not violate Google's guidelines on hidden text and links. If you prefer not to publish a specific supporting-content suggestion, simply disable it at the recommendation level before re-engaging OTTO.
🛠️ Tasks stuck in Pending: Some tasks may remain in Pending status when OTTO cannot generate a fix. The most common cause is image alt text recommendations where the image itself is missing from the site (not just missing alt text — the underlying image file cannot be found on the page). OTTO cannot generate alt text for an image that doesn't exist, so the task will stay in Pending. To resolve these, either add the missing image to the page and re-scan, or accept that those specific tasks will remain unresolvable until the image is present on the site.
🧠 What each state means:
- Enabled → Will be applied when OTTO is active
- Disabled → Will never be applied, even after re-engaging OTTO
You can mix enabled and disabled items freely. Automation is granular, not all-or-nothing.
▶️ Step 4: Re-Engage OTTO When Ready
After reviewing and configuring what should be published:
- Return to the site overview
- Toggle OTTO back to Engaged
OTTO will now:
- 🚀 Publish only the enabled recommendations
- ⛔ Skip anything you disabled
- 🔁 Respect your selections going forward
You can disengage and re-engage OTTO as often as needed.
🧊 What happens if I leave OTTO disengaged?
Nothing changes on your site.
- ❌ No SEO updates are pushed
- 🧾 No content is overwritten
- 🗂️ All recommendations remain in a review state
OTTO stays paused until you manually re-enable it.
