🔍 What Is the Ranking Factor Matrix?

The Ranking Factor Matrix is a feature inside Search Atlas GBP Projects that evaluates your Google Business Profile (GBP) across a set of weighted ranking signals. Each signal is scored and combined to give you an overall picture of how well your profile is optimised for local search visibility. Risk Penalty is one of the key metrics within this matrix.

⚠️ What Is Risk Penalty?

The Risk Penalty is a negative scoring modifier applied to your Ranking Factor Matrix score when your Google Business Profile contains elements that are known to harm local search rankings or violate Google's guidelines. Unlike positive ranking factors that reward good optimisation, the Risk Penalty actively reduces your overall score to reflect issues that could suppress your visibility or trigger a Google penalty.

In plain terms: the higher your Risk Penalty value, the more your profile is being dragged down by risky or problematic signals. A Risk Penalty of zero means no detectable risk factors are present.

🧩 What Components Make Up the Risk Penalty?

The Risk Penalty is calculated from a combination of risk signals detected on your profile. The main components include:

  • Keyword stuffing in business name: Adding non-branded keywords to your GBP business name is a well-known guideline violation. When detected, this contributes a significant penalty to your score.
  • Inconsistent NAP data: Mismatches between your Name, Address, and Phone number across your GBP profile and other citations introduce a trust risk that is factored into the penalty.
  • Suspended or flagged profile signals: Indicators associated with profiles that have a history of suspensions, edits under review, or user-suggested changes that contradict your listed information.
  • Thin or missing profile content: Profiles lacking a business description, category selection, or other critical fields carry a higher risk of underperforming and contribute a smaller but measurable penalty.
  • Low review credibility signals: Unusual patterns in review velocity or rating distribution that may indicate quality issues are factored in as a minor risk component.
  • Unverified profile status: An unverified GBP listing is treated as a risk signal because Google limits the ranking potential of unverified profiles.

📐 How Is Risk Penalty Scored?

Each risk component is assigned a weight based on how severely it is known to impact local rankings. The individual component scores are summed and then applied as a deduction against your total Ranking Factor Matrix score. The penalty is displayed as a negative number in the matrix breakdown, so you can clearly see how much each risk component is costing you.

The overall Risk Penalty is presented alongside your other ranking factors so you can prioritise which issues to fix first for the greatest improvement in your composite score.
