🔄 Migrate Your OTTO Tracking Script Between Websites

🔍 What Is the OTTO Tracking Script?

The OTTO tracking script is a small piece of JavaScript code that connects your website to OTTO, Search Atlas's OTTO SEO automation engine. It must be installed on any site you want OTTO to monitor and optimize. When you move to a new website, you need to migrate this script to keep OTTO working correctly.

📍 Step 1: Locate Your OTTO Tracking Script

Follow these steps to find the tracking script for your site:

  1. Log in to your Search Atlas account.
  2. In the left sidebar, click OTTO SEO, then open SEO Automation (URL: /seo-automation-v3).
  3. Select the website project that currently has OTTO activated.
  4. Navigate to the OTTO Settings or Site Settings section within your project dashboard.
  5. Locate the Tracking Script panel. Your unique script snippet will be displayed there.
  6. Copy the full script code to your clipboard or a temporary text file — you will need it in Step 4.

🔕 Step 2: Deactivate OTTO on the Old Website

Before migrating, deactivate the script on your old site to avoid duplicate tracking, conflicting data, or billing issues tied to an inactive domain.

  1. In the same OTTO Settings panel, look for the option to Deactivate OTTO or Disconnect Site.

  2. Confirm the deactivation when prompted. OTTO will stop collecting data from the old site immediately.

  3. Remove the tracking script from your old website's source code. Depending on your CMS:

    • WordPress: Remove it from your theme's header.php file, or deactivate the plugin/snippet that injected it.
    • Shopify: Remove it from the theme.liquid file in your theme editor.
    • Other CMS or custom site: Delete the script tag from the global <head> section of your site template.

  4. Save and publish the changes on your old site.

🌐 Step 3: Add Your New Website to Search Atlas

If your new website does not yet have a project in Search Atlas, create one before installing the script.

  1. In the left sidebar, click OTTO SEO, then open SEO Automation.
  2. Click Add New Site or + New Project.
  3. Enter your new website's URL and complete the setup prompts.
  4. Once the project is created, open it and navigate to OTTO Settings.
  5. Click Activate OTTO to generate a tracking script for the new site. Each site receives its own unique script — do not reuse the script from your old site.

📋 Step 4: Install the Tracking Script on Your New Website

Copy and paste the new script into your website's code as close to the top of the <head> section as possible.

  • WordPress: Paste the script using a header plugin such as Insert Headers and Footers, or add it directly to header.php in your active theme.
  • Shopify: Go to Online Store → Themes → Edit Code, open theme.liquid, and paste the script inside the <head> tag.
  • Other CMS or custom site: Paste the script inside the global <head> template file that loads on every page.

Save and publish your changes after pasting the script.

✅ Step 5: Validate the Installation

After installing the script, confirm that OTTO is receiving data from the new site:

  1. Return to Search Atlas and open the new site's project under OTTO SEO > SEO Automation.
  2. Check the OTTO Settings panel for a connection status indicator. It should show Connected or Active.
  3. If the status shows Not Detected, wait up to 10 minutes and refresh the page, as propagation can take a short time.
  4. If the script is still not detected after 10 minutes, use your browser's developer tools (View Source or the Elements tab) to confirm the script tag is present in the <head> of your new site.
  5. Correct any copy-paste errors and re-save if needed, then check the status again.

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Each OTTO tracking script is unique to a specific website project. Never copy a script from one site and paste it on a different domain.
  • Deactivating the old site first prevents your analytics from mixing data between two domains.
  • If you are migrating to a subdomain or a staging environment, create a separate project for each to keep data clean.
