🧩 What Is the OTTO Pixel?
The OTTO pixel is a small snippet of code placed on your website that allows OTTO SEO to monitor your pages, trigger automations, and apply on-page optimizations in real time. It acts as the communication bridge between your site and the OTTO SEO engine inside Search Atlas.
💡 Does Removing the Pixel Undo Past SEO Work?
It depends on how the changes were applied. OTTO applies most changes through the OTTO pixel script at page load, so if the pixel is removed or the OTTO project is deleted, those pixel-served changes will stop showing on the site. Changes that were written directly into the site's CMS — for example through the WordPress plugin — can remain in place after the pixel is removed.
Think of the pixel as an active connection that serves most optimizations. Only changes written directly into your CMS exist independently of the pixel.
⚙️ What Does Stop Working After Removal
While your past optimizations are preserved, removing the pixel does disable OTTO's ongoing and future capabilities. Here is what will no longer function once the pixel is removed:
- Real-time monitoring: OTTO will no longer be able to detect changes on your pages or identify new issues as they arise.
- New automations: Any optimization tasks that have not yet been executed will not be applied.
- Dynamic updates: OTTO will be unable to push additional improvements or respond to changes in your site structure.
- Page crawling triggers: New or uncrawled pages will not be discovered and queued for optimization.
📋 What Stays Intact After Removal
The following remain unaffected when you remove the pixel:
- Changes that were written directly into your site's CMS (for example through the WordPress plugin)
- Your historical data and reports inside Search Atlas
🚀 Should You Remove the Pixel?
Before removing the OTTO pixel, consider why you want to take this step. Common reasons and recommendations include:
- Temporary pause: If you want to pause OTTO activity without losing your setup, consider using the Freeze option inside OTTO SEO instead of removing the pixel entirely. Navigate to Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites (SEO Automation) and use the Freeze sites action to pause activity while keeping the pixel in place.
- Site migration or redesign: If your site is undergoing major structural changes, removing the pixel temporarily is reasonable. You can reinstall it once the work is complete and reactivate OTTO from the same screen.
- White-label or client handoff: If you are managing a site on behalf of a client and handing it over, be aware that pixel-served changes will stop showing once the pixel is removed; only changes written directly into the CMS will remain.
🛠️ How to Remove or Reinstall the Pixel
- Go to Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites (SEO Automation) (URL: /seo-automation-v3).
- Locate the site you want to manage in your active or frozen site list.
- Follow the pixel removal or reinstallation instructions provided within the OTTO SEO interface for your specific site setup (WordPress, custom HTML, or tag manager).
- If reinstalling, allow OTTO a short period to re-crawl your pages and resume monitoring before expecting new optimizations to trigger.
