🧭 Overview

If OTTO SEO is not detecting your head tag after you have added it to your website, the most effective fix is to remove your site from OTTO and re-add it. This forces OTTO to perform a fresh verification check and pick up the tag correctly.

Follow the steps below carefully to complete this process without losing your progress.

⚠️ Before You Begin

  • Confirm that your OTTO head tag is already placed in the <head> section of your website before re-adding your site.
  • Make sure the tag is present on every page of your site — ideally added at the theme or template level, not page by page.
  • If you are unsure whether the tag is live, open your site in a browser, right-click the page, select View Page Source, and search for your OTTO tag in the <head> block.

🗑️ Step 1: Remove Your Site from OTTO SEO

  1. In the left sidebar, click OTTO SEO and then open SEO Automation to access the OTTO SEO dashboard.
  2. Locate the site you need to fix in your list of connected properties.
  3. Open the site options (usually a three-dot menu or settings icon next to the site name).
  4. Select Remove Site or Disconnect Site and confirm the action when prompted.

Your site will be removed from OTTO. No SEO recommendations or historical data in other areas of Search Atlas will be affected by this action.

➕ Step 2: Re-Add Your Site to OTTO SEO

  1. From the same SEO Automation page, click the Create button (or the equivalent prompt displayed on screen).
  2. Enter your website URL exactly as it appears — include https:// and match the www or non-www version your site uses.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to proceed to the head tag step.
  4. OTTO will display your unique head tag. Because you already placed this tag on your site, you do not need to add it again — simply proceed to the verification step.
  5. Click Verify or Confirm Tag. OTTO will crawl your site and confirm the tag is detected.

If verification succeeds, your site will be reconnected and OTTO will begin analysing your pages.

🔍 Troubleshooting: Verification Still Failing

If OTTO still cannot detect your head tag after re-adding the site, check the following:

  • Caching: Your website or hosting provider may be serving a cached version of the page without the tag. Clear your site cache and try verifying again.
  • Tag placement: The tag must be inside the <head> element, not inside <body>. Some page builders place scripts in the wrong location.
  • Plugin or theme conflicts: On WordPress, a caching or security plugin may be stripping custom head code. Temporarily disable these plugins and re-test.
  • Partial deployment: If your site uses a staging environment, confirm the tag has been pushed to the live site, not just staging.

💡 Tips to Avoid This Issue in the Future

  • Use a tag manager (such as Google Tag Manager) or your theme's global header settings to ensure the OTTO tag loads site-wide from a single location.
  • After any theme update or migration, re-check that the head tag is still present in the page source.
  • Verify your site in OTTO immediately after placing the tag, before launching any caching or minification tools.
