🚨 Why am I seeing “Quota Exhausted” in Search Atlas?

Understanding usage limits and what to do when a quota is reached.

Updated over 2 months ago

If you see the message “Quota Exhausted” anywhere in Search Atlas, it means your account has reached the usage limit for a specific feature included in your plan or trial.

This article explains what this error means, why it happens, and what you can do next, regardless of the tool you’re using.

🔍 What does “Quota Exhausted” mean?

Search Atlas uses quotas to control usage across different features.

When a quota is fully used:

  • ⛔ The system blocks the action you’re trying to perform

  • ❌ New actions for that feature are temporarily unavailable

  • 🔒 This applies automatically and consistently across the platform

👉 This is expected system behavior, not a bug.

🧠 Why does this happen?

Each Search Atlas feature consumes quota based on usage, not just setup.

Common reasons include:

🔄 1. High-frequency usage

Actions like:

  • Re-running scans

  • Refreshing data

  • Updating tracking
consume quota every time they run.

📊 2. Large inputs

Using:

  • Many keywords

  • Multiple sites

  • Large datasets
can consume quota faster than expected.

🧪 3. Trial and plan limits

  • Free trials include limited quotas

  • Paid plans include monthly quota caps

  • Quotas are not unlimited unless explicitly stated

🗑️ 4. Removing data does not restore quota

Deleting items, keywords, or projects:

  • ❌ Does not give quota back

  • ✅ Quota only increases via reset or purchase

📊 How quotas work across Search Atlas (Detailed Breakdown)

🔽 Plan quotas vs Top-Ups (Important distinction)

Quotas included in your plan

Every Search Atlas plan (Starter, Growth, Pro, Agency) includes built-in monthly quotas for different features such as:

  • AI credits

  • Local SEO heatmaps

  • Rank tracking refreshes

  • Authority building credits

  • Automations and indexing

These quotas:

  • ✅ Are included in your monthly subscription

  • 🔁 Reset automatically every billing cycle

  • ❌ Do not roll over if unused (unless explicitly stated)

Top-Ups (additional purchased quota)

Top-Ups are extra quota purchases that sit on top of your plan.

Important:

  • Some Top-Ups are recurring

  • Some Top-Ups are non-recurring (rollover)

⚠️ This distinction matters and is a common source of confusion.

🔽 Recurring vs Non-Recurring Top-Ups — what does this mean?

🔁 Recurring Top-Ups

These:

  • Are billed monthly

  • Reset every billing cycle

  • Behave like an extension of your plan quota

Examples:

  • Local SEO Points

  • Keyword Rank Tracker refreshes

  • GBP Automation locations

  • User Seats

  • OTTO Sites

👉 If unused, they do not carry over to the next month.

➕ Non-Recurring (Rollover) Top-Ups

These:

  • Are purchased once

  • Do NOT reset monthly

  • Remain in your account until fully used

Examples:

  • AI Premium Quota

  • OTTO AI quota points

  • URL Indexer quota

  • Hyperdrive Credits

👉 These are ideal for one-time or burst usage.

⚙️ What consumes quota by feature (and how it can be used without noticing)

🔽 AI Quota / AI Generation (OTTO & AI tools)

Consumed when:

  • Generating AI metadata, headings, internal links

  • Creating topical maps

  • Generating landing pages

  • AI suggestions inside OTTO

  • AI-assisted GBP posts

Easy to miss when:

  • Running bulk fixes or recommendations

  • Accepting multiple AI suggestions quickly

  • Generating content drafts you don’t end up publishing

🔽 AI Premium Quota (Content Genius)

Consumed when:

  • Generating full AI articles

  • Generating topical maps inside Content Genius

  • Running AI tasks inside the editor

Important:

  • 1 full article = 3 AI Premium credits

  • Credits are charged at generation, not publication

Easy to miss when:

  • Regenerating articles multiple times

  • Creating topical maps “just to explore”

🔽 Local SEO Points (Heatmaps)

Consumed when:

  • Running Local SEO heatmap scans

  • Using multiple layers per heatmap

How it’s calculated:

  • 1 heatmap layer = 1 point

  • Example: 4-layer heatmap = 4 points

Easy to miss when:

  • Refreshing heatmaps frequently

  • Using many layers or locations

  • Assuming deleting heatmaps restores quota (it doesn’t)

🔽 Keyword Rank Tracker

Consumed when:

  • Adding keywords for tracking

  • Refreshing keyword rankings

Easy to miss when:

  • Refreshing rankings too frequently

  • Tracking large keyword sets across multiple sites

🔽 GBP Automation Locations

Consumed when:

  • Enabling automations for:

    • Posts

    • Q&A

    • Review replies

Calculated per location

Easy to miss when:

  • Leaving automations enabled across many locations

  • Forgetting automations are running continuously

🔽 URL Indexer (Authority Building)

Consumed when:

  • Submitting URLs for indexing

Important:

  • Indexer quotas are non-recurring

  • They roll over until used

Easy to miss when:

  • Submitting URLs in bulk

  • Retrying indexing multiple times

🔽 Hyperdrive Credits (Authority Building / OTTO)

Consumed when:

  • Publishing CloudStacks

  • Running press release campaigns

  • Submitting links for authority building

Important distinction:

  • Plans include monthly Hyperdrive credits

  • Purchased Hyperdrive credits are rollover

Easy to miss when:

  • Launching campaigns without checking credit cost

  • Running dynamic press campaigns (extra credits apply)

🔽 User Seats

Consumed when:

  • Adding additional team members

Important:

  • User seats are recurring monthly charges

  • They are not usage-based credits

Easy to miss when:

  • Adding seats temporarily and forgetting to remove them

🚨 Why users often run out of quota without realizing it

The most common reasons:

  • High-frequency refreshes (heatmaps, rankings, audits)

  • Large inputs (many keywords, many locations, many URLs)

  • AI regeneration loops (“try again” behavior)

  • Automations left running

  • Assuming trial = unlimited

  • Confusing rollover credits with monthly credits

⚠️ Is this a bug?

No.

When a quota limit is reached, Search Atlas intentionally prevents additional usage to keep accounts within their plan limits.

Once more quota is available, access is automatically restored.

🛠️ How can I get more quota?

You have three clear options:

➕ Option 1: Purchase more quota (Top-Up) — Immediate

  1. Click your avatar (👤)

  2. Go to Account Menu → Billing

  3. Select Top-Up

  4. Purchase additional quota for the feature you need

✔️ Adds quota instantly without changing your plan.

📈 Option 2: Upgrade your plan — More monthly quota

  1. Go to Account Menu → Billing

  2. Click Change Plan

  3. Choose a higher plan

  4. Complete checkout

✔️ Your monthly quota increases and resets every billing cycle.

⏳ Option 3: Wait for the quota reset — No action needed

  • Quotas automatically reset at the start of your next billing period.

🧭 How to avoid running out of quota

  • Monitor your quota indicators before running actions

  • Avoid unnecessary refreshes or re-runs

  • Start with smaller inputs and scale gradually

  • Plan usage around how often data realistically changes

🧩 Key takeaway

“Quota Exhausted” means you’ve reached a usage limit for a feature, not that something is broken.

Once more quota is available, you can continue working normally.

Quota exhaustion is almost always caused by normal usage patterns, not bugs.

Understanding:

  • What consumes quota

  • Which quotas reset

  • Which ones roll over

…helps you plan usage, avoid surprises, and choose the right Top-Ups when needed.
