🎯 Who This Article Is For
This guide is for digital marketing agencies managing a Google Business Profile (GBP) that was originally created in one city (for example, Corona, CA) but now operates from a different location (for example, Los Angeles, CA) and plans to open additional offices in the future. It covers how to preserve the equity in your existing profile and maintain consistent Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) signals at each stage.
📌 Understanding Your Starting Point
Before making any changes, map out your current situation clearly. You likely have one or more of the following:
- An existing GBP with equity — This profile has reviews, ranking history, and citation authority built up over time. Its location (for example, Corona) may no longer reflect where you actually operate.
- A current operating address — Your agency actively works from a different city (for example, Los Angeles) but has not yet updated the GBP to reflect this.
- A planned future office — You intend to open a physical office in a new location and want to prepare your GBP and local SEO strategy in advance.
The core risk in this scenario is making sudden changes that confuse Google, dilute your existing profile equity, or create conflicting NAP data across the web.
⚠️ Key Risks to Avoid
- Abrupt address changes on an established profile — Changing the address of a GBP with strong equity can trigger a re-verification process and temporarily suppress rankings.
- Inconsistent NAP signals — If your citations, website, and GBP all show different addresses, Google and other directories will struggle to determine your authoritative location, which harms local rankings.
- Creating duplicate GBP listings — Registering multiple listings for the same business entity without a clear physical address for each violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
- Activating OTTO before your GBP and NAP data are aligned — Ensure your profile information is accurate and consistent before enabling OTTO on a location, so that any optimisations are applied to correct, stable data.
🛠️ Step 1 — Stabilise Your Existing Profile Before Any Changes
- Audit your current NAP data. Document the exact business name, address, and phone number on your existing GBP. Note every major citation source (Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, industry directories) where this NAP appears.
- Decide whether to update or create. If your original GBP has significant review equity and rankings, do not create a new listing for the new city. Instead, plan a controlled migration of the existing profile to the new address once you have a verifiable physical location there.
- Do not change the GBP address until you have a verified physical presence. Google requires a real, staffed address for verification. A P.O. box or virtual office typically does not qualify.
🛠️ Step 2 — Update NAP Consistency Across Citations
- Update your website first. Your website's contact page, footer, and schema markup should reflect the correct current address before you update any external citations or your GBP.
- Update citations methodically. Work through each citation source and update the address to match your GBP exactly — same abbreviations, same suite format, same phone number. Inconsistencies across even minor fields can create conflicting signals.
- Allow time for changes to propagate. After updating citations, wait for directories to index the new data before making further changes to your GBP address.
🛠️ Step 3 — Prepare for Future Locations
- Create a separate GBP for each new physical office. Each location must have its own distinct, verifiable address. Do not list a future office until you have a confirmed address and can complete Google's verification process.
- Build NAP assets for the new location independently. Begin citation building for the new address only after the GBP for that location is verified, so all signals point to the same confirmed data from the start.
🛠️ Step 4 — Connect OTTO to Your Locations
Because the source of truth for OTTO configuration is your GBP data, OTTO should only be connected to a location after the steps above are complete. If you need specific guidance on how to activate or configure OTTO for a particular location in your account, our support team can walk you through the process based on your current setup.
To escalate efficiently, please have the following ready:
- The name of the project or workspace in Search Atlas
- The GBP location(s) you want to connect OTTO to
- Confirmation of whether each location's NAP data is currently consistent across citations and your GBP
- Any error messages or unexpected behaviour you have observed
