🏠 Why This Matters for Service Area Businesses
A service area business (SAB) is any business that travels to customers rather than serving them at a fixed storefront — think plumbers, cleaners, landscapers, or mobile pet groomers. Google and data aggregators both support SAB listings, but they require some address on file for verification and citation purposes, even if that address is never shown to the public.
If your registered business address is a personal residence you don't want published — such as a family member's home — you have legitimate, compliant options for protecting that privacy while still building a strong local presence.
✅ Acceptable Alternate Address Types
Before submitting to any data aggregator or updating your Google Business Profile, you need a consistent, verifiable address that you are authorized to use. The following address types are widely accepted:
- Commercial mailbox or UPS Store mailbox: Provides a real street address (not a P.O. box format). Widely accepted by aggregators and usable for GBP verification in many markets.
- Virtual office or coworking space: A physical commercial address where mail can be received. Many providers offer a registered address service specifically for this use case.
- Storage unit facility with a business address: Some facilities offer a business address service. Confirm with the provider that the address can be used for business registration before using it.
- Shared office or incubator space: Common for small businesses that want a legitimate commercial presence without a full lease.
Important: The address you choose must be a real, physical location where you can receive mail or have a presence. Fabricated or entirely fictional addresses violate Google's guidelines and aggregator terms of service and can result in listing suspension.
🔒 How to Hide Your Address on Google Business Profile
Once you have an alternate address in place and your GBP listing is verified, you can configure it as a true SAB so the address is not displayed publicly:
- Log in to your Google Business Profile account.
- Navigate to your profile's editing options and locate the business location or address settings.
- Enter your alternate address for verification purposes.
- Find the service area section and define the geographic areas you serve.
- Remove the business address from the public-facing display — Google provides this option specifically for SABs. The address remains on file with Google but is hidden from Maps.
Google will still use the address internally for ranking and relevance signals, but customers searching on Maps will see only your service area, not a street address.
