NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number — the three core pieces of business information that search engines use to verify your local presence. When your phone number differs across your Google Business Profile (GBP), local citations, and OTTO SEO settings, it can confuse search engines and hurt your local rankings. This article explains what to do when your phone number is not propagating consistently across GBP, Citations, and OTTO SEO in Search Atlas.
⚠️ What Is NAP Propagation?
When you update your phone number in one place — such as your Google Business Profile — that change needs to be reflected everywhere your business information appears: local directory citations and your OTTO SEO project. If these are out of sync, it can negatively affect your local SEO rankings. Propagation is not always instant and may take time to reflect across all connected systems.
✅ Recommended Order to Update Your Phone Number
To ensure your new phone number propagates correctly and consistently, follow this sequence:
- Update your Google Business Profile (GBP) first. Log in to your Google Business Profile and update the phone number there. GBP is the authoritative source that Search Atlas syncs from, so this must be done before making any changes in Search Atlas.
- Update your Citations in Search Atlas. Navigate to the Local Citations section in Search Atlas and update the phone number for the affected business location. This ensures your directory listings reflect the new number.
- Update your OTTO SEO project. Go to your OTTO SEO project settings and confirm or update the phone number there so it matches your GBP and Citations entries.
- Allow time for propagation. Changes may not be instant. Wait 24–72 hours for the updated number to propagate across connected systems and local directories.
- Verify consistency. After the propagation window, check all three areas — GBP, Citations, and OTTO SEO — to confirm the phone number is consistent.
