🔍 Overview
Your location quota tracks the number of unique targeting configurations active across your connected sites — not simply the number of websites you have added. This means one website can consume more than one quota slot if it is set up with multiple location or targeting combinations.
📊 How Quota Consumption Works
Each time you add a site + targeting configuration pair in Search Atlas, it uses one quota slot. A targeting configuration is the combination of a site with a specific country, region, or device target set for data tracking.
Here is a simple breakdown of how slots are counted:
- 1 site × 1 targeting config = 1 quota slot used
- 1 site × 2 targeting configs = 2 quota slots used
- 2 sites × 2 targeting configs each = 4 quota slots used
- 3 sites × 1 targeting config each = 3 quota slots used
This is why you may see a quota count that appears higher than the number of websites in your account.
🌐 Does "Worldwide" Targeting Still Use a Quota Slot?
Yes. Setting a site to Worldwide targeting still counts as one targeting configuration and consumes one quota slot. Worldwide is treated as a distinct targeting option alongside country- or region-specific settings.
💡 Worked Example: 5 Slots Used Across 3 Sites
Suppose your account shows 5 out of 5 quota slots used but you only have 3 websites connected. Here is one way that can happen:
- Site A — configured with Worldwide targeting + United States targeting = 2 slots
- Site B — configured with Worldwide targeting + United Kingdom targeting = 2 slots
- Site C — configured with Worldwide targeting only = 1 slot
Total: 3 sites, 5 quota slots consumed. No additional quota purchase is needed — you simply have more targeting configurations active than you may have realised.
🔎 How to Review Your Active Targeting Configurations
- In the left sidebar, click Keywords → Rank Tracker (Keyword Rank Tracker).
- On the site list page, locate each connected site.
- Check how many targeting configurations are listed under each site.
- To view or manage rank tracking targets specifically, go to Keywords → Rank Tracker and review the location settings assigned to each site.
Each active configuration you see corresponds to one quota slot.
🗑️ How to Free Up Quota Slots
If you have reached your quota limit and need to add a new configuration without upgrading, you can remove an existing targeting configuration that is no longer needed.
- Navigate to Keywords → Rank Tracker in the left sidebar.
- Select the site whose configuration you want to remove.
- Delete or edit the targeting configuration you no longer require.
- Your available quota will update immediately.
Note: Removing a targeting configuration will delete the associated tracking data for that site-location pair. Make sure you no longer need that data before removing it.
⬆️ When You Actually Need More Quota
You only need to upgrade your quota when you genuinely want to track more unique site-and-location combinations than your current plan allows, and you do not have any existing configurations you are willing to remove. If your current configurations match your actual tracking needs, no upgrade is necessary.
