Overview
Otto, Search Atlas's OTTO SEO automation bot, can be connected to your website through Google Tag Manager (GTM) instead of a direct script embed. This approach works well for React + Vite sites — such as political candidate websites — where modifying the base HTML manually can be complex.
Step 1: Retrieve Your Otto Script Snippet
Log in to your Search Atlas account and navigate to your project. Locate your unique Otto script snippet within your project settings — copy the full script tag, including the opening and closing <script> tags.
Step 2: Install the GTM Container in Your React + Vite Project
If you have not already done so, install your GTM container snippet in your React + Vite project. Place the GTM container snippet in the <head> section of your site's base HTML file, and the GTM <noscript> snippet immediately after the opening <body> tag. Save and redeploy your project so the changes take effect.
Step 3: Add Otto as a Custom HTML Tag in GTM
Once GTM is live on your site, create a new tag to inject the Otto script:
- Open Google Tag Manager and select your container.
- Click Tags in the left menu, then click New.
- Under Tag Configuration, choose Custom HTML.
- Paste your Otto script snippet into the HTML field.
- Under Triggering, select All Pages (or your preferred trigger) so Otto fires on every page load.
- Name the tag (e.g., Otto – Search Atlas) and click Save.
Step 4: Publish Your GTM Container
After saving your tag and triggers, click Submit in GTM to publish the container. Without publishing, your changes will not be live on the website.
Step 5: Confirm Otto Is Running
After publishing, return to your Search Atlas project and confirm that Otto is active. If you are unsure whether Otto is crawling your site correctly after the GTM setup, reach out to the support team for confirmation.
