After connecting the OTTO Pixel through Google Tag Manager (GTM), some customers expect the Verify button to turn green right away. This article explains why there is a normal detection delay, what to expect during that window, and how to tell the difference between a delay and an actual installation problem.
⏳ The 15–20 Minute Detection Window Is Normal
Once you publish your OTTO Pixel tag in GTM and the tag fires on your website, OTTO does not detect the pixel instantly. OTTO requires 15 to 20 minutes to scan your site and confirm that the pixel is active. This is expected behavior, not a failure.
During this window you may notice:
- The Verify button remains unresponsive or does not turn green.
- The pixel status shows as unverified or pending.
- No confirmation message appears in the OTTO dashboard.
This does not mean something is broken. The scan is running in the background and will complete automatically.
✅ What to Do Immediately After GTM Setup
- In GTM, confirm your OTTO Pixel tag is published — not just saved or previewed. A tag that is only in Preview mode will not fire on your live site.
- Visit your live website in a browser and load at least one page to trigger the tag.
- Navigate to OTTO SEO in the left sidebar of Search Atlas (URL:
/seo-automation-v3) and open your OTTO project. - Wait 15 to 20 minutes before clicking Verify. Clicking the button repeatedly before the scan completes will not speed up detection.
- After 20 minutes, click Verify once to prompt OTTO to check the pixel status.
🟢 Why the Verify Button May Not Show Green Immediately
The Verify button reflects the result of OTTO's most recent scan, not a real-time check. Until the first successful scan is complete, the button will appear inactive or unchanged regardless of how many times it is clicked. Once OTTO detects the pixel signal from your live site, the status updates automatically and the button will turn green on the next check.
⚠️ Normal Delay vs. Actual Installation Failure
Use the table below to identify which situation applies to you.
- Normal delay (wait it out): It has been fewer than 20 minutes since you published the GTM tag, the tag is published and firing on your live site, and the Verify button simply has not turned green yet.
- Possible installation issue (action required): More than 20 minutes have passed, the Verify button is still not confirming the pixel, or you see a Pixel Incorrectly Installed alert inside OTTO.

🛠️ If the Pixel Is Still Not Detected After 20 Minutes
Work through these checks in order before assuming the installation has failed.
- Confirm the GTM container is published. Open GTM, go to your workspace, and check that the version containing the OTTO Pixel tag has been submitted and published. A submitted-but-not-published container will not fire live.
- Check that the tag is firing on the correct pages. In GTM Preview mode, load your website and verify that the OTTO Pixel tag appears under Tags Fired. If it appears under Tags Not Fired, review your trigger configuration.
- Verify the GTM container snippet is on your site. Your website's
<head>section must contain the GTM container snippet. If the snippet is missing, the OTTO Pixel tag will never fire regardless of GTM settings. - Check for tag sequencing or consent mode blocks. If your site uses a Consent Management Platform (CMP) or cookie banner, the OTTO Pixel tag may be blocked until a visitor consents. Temporarily check whether the tag fires in a consented state.
- Hard-refresh the OTTO dashboard. Press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to clear cached status and then click Verify again.
