Should You Set Up on Staging or Production First?
Search Atlas recommends completing your initial setup on your production environment whenever possible. This ensures that the domain Search Atlas tracks matches the property verified in Google Search Console (GSC), which helps prevent authentication mismatches and data gaps.
If your workflow requires staging setup first — for example, to test tracking before a site launch — that is supported, but you must reconnect your GSC account after pushing to production. The authentication is tied to the domain and environment at the time of connection, so it does not carry over automatically.
What Happens to Your GSC Connection During Deployment?
When you push from staging to production, your GSC connection will likely break. This is expected behavior and not a bug. Staging and production URLs are treated as separate properties in GSC, and the authorization state stored by Search Atlas becomes invalid when the domain changes.
Until you reconnect, Search Atlas will not be able to pull GSC data for your production site.
Recommended Setup Order
- Launch your production site and verify ownership of the production domain inside Google Search Console.
- Log in to Search Atlas and navigate to Site Metrics → Site Explorer → Manage Sites/Connect GSC Account (GSC Accounts page).
- Connect GSC using your production property (see the steps below).
- Allow some time for data to begin populating from your production domain.
If you have already connected GSC on staging and have now deployed to production, skip straight to the reconnection steps below.
How to Connect or Reconnect Your GSC Account
- Log in to Search Atlas and navigate to Site Metrics → Site Explorer → Manage Sites/Connect GSC Account (GSC Accounts page).
- If a previous GSC connection exists, remove the stale staging connection before proceeding.
- Initiate a new GSC connection and complete the OAuth authorization flow. Make sure you select the Google account that has access to your production GSC property.
- Once connected, Search Atlas will automatically import every verified GSC property that the connected Google account has access to. Unverified properties are not imported.
- Allow some time for production data to begin syncing.
