🔗 What this issue looks like
Internal linking adds links from one article to other pages in the same brand vault. When it produces nothing, that article gets no new links, or a link is selected but cannot be placed in the article text. Each vault is handled separately. The step that does this is an editor action called inserting internal links; it is not a button or an action you apply across vaults.
A problem in more than one vault usually means a shared setting, an unfinished crawl, or missing target pages, not a single page error.
⚙️ Check each affected vault
Work through the vaults one at a time so you can see which ones still fail.
- Open the brand vault for the site you are editing. A vault belongs to one site address and can be linked to the matching OTTO project, but you work in the vault itself.
- The vault can supply link destinations from any one of these: a link you add under Content, a top page from Google Search Console, or a page published to WordPress or Website Studio. A crawled page is used only when none of those sources has a usable page.
- Confirm the target page is available through one of the vault’s link sources. A top page already marked broken is skipped, and every selected address is checked live and must respond successfully. A crawled page must be an active HTML page that returned a successful response and has enough text.
- Check that each address is valid and opens successfully. Pages found automatically should belong to the vault’s site. A link you add by hand is used as you entered it, so an address on another site is not rejected.
- There is no separate exclusion list for internal links. A link is skipped when its address is empty or broken, its live check fails, or the article text contains no suitable phrase for it. Each article also has a maximum number of internal links.
- You do not need to run a crawl first. If the vault has no added links, no top pages, and no published pages, the editor can use pages from a completed site crawl automatically. If a crawl is still running, it simply is not used yet.
🛠️ Run internal linking again
Ask the editor to insert internal links in one article. The same request cannot be applied to the whole vault; repeat it for each article you want to update.
- Start small. Test one source page that should link to a known related page.
- The inserted link is written into the article immediately. Check that it appears in the article and points to the right address. This is separate from Save in the vault’s Content settings, which only stores the vault’s link list.
- Repeat in a second vault. If it works in one vault and fails in another, compare crawl status, page count, and exclusions.
- Inserting internal links finishes as part of the editing request, although the check can take up to about a minute. You do not have to wait for a background run. Repeating the request does not add the same address twice.
If every vault fails in the same way after a completed crawl and valid target pages, the feature may need a support review. You do not need to keep rerunning it.
📊 Details that speed up a fix
Before you contact support, note the following for each affected vault:
- Vault or brand name
- Source page URL and one expected target URL
- Whether the crawl has finished
- The approximate time the article edit failed while inserting internal links.
- Whether the failure happens in every vault or only some brands
- A short description of what you see, such as no links added or links not saved
💡 How to contact support
If you need further assistance, open the chat widget in the bottom-right corner of the platform and send your message. A member of our support team will reply in the chat.
Include the vault details from the list above in your first message. That lets the team check the insert internal links action across the affected brand vaults without another round of questions.
