🔐 Fix Content Genius 403 Errors

Last updated on Oct 29, 2026

🔍 What the 403 error means

A 403 permissions error means Content Genius received your request but refused it. On an article, this is the page share setting, not an account or workspace admin role. The page owner, Search Atlas staff, and superusers can always edit. Everyone else can edit only when the article’s Share dialog is set to “Team can edit,” or their email is granted “Can edit.” Being an admin of the account does not override a view-only share.

✅ Check the user’s access

  1. Confirm the team member is signed in to the correct Search Atlas account and workspace.
  2. Verify they have access to the specific project containing the content.
  3. Check the article’s Share settings rather than its assignment or status. An article assigned to someone else, set to Needs review, marked Complete, or archived can still be edited by anyone who has edit access.
  4. Confirm the article’s Share access. Editing is allowed for the page owner, Search Atlas staff, a superuser, anyone when Share is set to “Team can edit,” and people explicitly granted “Can edit.” There is no submit or approve workflow that blocks the action.

🔄 Refresh the user’s permissions

After changing Share access, have the user refresh the article page, or reopen the article from Content Genius at dashboard.searchatlas.com/content/seo-content-assistant. The new permission applies on the next request without signing out. If it still fails, confirm their email has “Can edit” or that Share is set to “Team can edit.”

🛠️ Try these quick fixes

  • Refresh the Content Genius page.
  • Open the content from the project where it was created.
  • Try the action again in a private or incognito browser window.
  • Clear cached site data if the error continues.
  • Ask another user with confirmed project access to test the same action.

📋 If the error continues

Record the affected user, workspace, project, content item, action they attempted, and the approximate time of the error. Include a screenshot of the 403 message without sharing passwords or sensitive information.
