๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Fixing OTTO and Yoast Title Conflicts

Last updated on Oct 29, 2026

If you use both Yoast SEO and Search Atlas OTTO, you may see different page titles in each tool, or an old title that will not update. This article explains why that happens, how to check what visitors and search engines actually see, and how to get your OTTO title deployments live.

๐Ÿ”Ž Why Titles Can Differ Between Yoast and OTTO

Yoast and OTTO can both control the SEO title (the title tag) of a page. When both are active, they can disagree for a few common reasons:

  • Two sources of truth: Yoast stores its own title for each page, and OTTO stores a separate, optimized title. By default OTTO does not change Yoast's stored title, so the two dashboards can show different values. If Meta Title persistence and Sync to Other SEO Plugins are both enabled, OTTO copies its title into Yoast's SEO title field.
  • Caching: Your website, a caching plugin, or a CDN may be serving an older copy of the page, so new titles do not appear right away.
  • Duplicate title tags: On a WordPress site, Yoast normally outputs the single title tag, and OTTO replaces the text inside that tag rather than adding a second one. If both tools temporarily produce a title tag, OTTO's final processing keeps only one, so browsers and search engines should not see two.
  • Search engine rewrites: Google sometimes shows a different title in search results than the one on your page. This can look like an old title even when your site is correct.
  • Deployment not completed: The change may be queued, paused, or not yet applied to that specific page.

โœ… Step 1: Check What Your Page Actually Shows

Before changing any settings, confirm which title is really live on the page.

  1. Open the affected page in a private or incognito browser window.
  2. Right-click the page and choose View Page Source.
  3. Search for in the source.
  4. Note which title appears, and whether there is more than one title tag.

If the live title matches OTTO, that is what you expect after a successful deployment, but a page cache or a manually entered Search Atlas title can produce the same result. If the live title matches Yoast, OTTO's change may not be applied to that page yet, or OTTO may be turned off for that page or URL. Seeing two title tags on a WordPress page is not the normal result of this conflict, because OTTO is built to leave only one title tag.

๐Ÿงน Step 2: Clear Your Caches

Old titles are often caused by cached pages. Clear every layer you use:

  • Your WordPress caching plugin (for example, a page cache or performance plugin).
  • Your CDN or hosting-level cache, if you use one.
  • Your browser cache, or test in a private window.

After clearing, reload the page and check the page source again.

โš™๏ธ Step 3: Choose One Tool to Control Each Title

The most reliable way to avoid conflicts is to decide which tool controls the title for each page.

  • If you want OTTO to control the title, approve and deploy the title change for that page, and make sure OTTO is enabled for the page and its URL is not excluded. A title entered manually in the Search Atlas SEO sidebar will override OTTO, so clear that field if you want OTTO's title to win. Yoast may still show its own stored title unless Meta Title persistence and Sync to Other SEO Plugins are enabled.
  • If you want Yoast to control the title: Do not deploy OTTO title changes for that page.

Keeping Yoast and OTTO in sync, or letting only one of them manage titles, prevents most mismatches. If you update a title in OTTO and want Yoast to match, update the same title in Yoast as well so both dashboards show the same value.

๐Ÿš€ Step 4: Check Your OTTO Deployment Status

If your OTTO deployments have not gone live after many days, check the following:

  1. Open OTTO in your Search Atlas project and find the affected pages.
  2. Confirm the title changes show as deployed, not just suggested or pending.
  3. Confirm OTTO is still properly installed and connected to your website. A site migration, theme change, or plugin change can disconnect it.
  4. Check for security or firewall settings on your site that might block OTTO from applying changes.
  5. Redeploy the change for one affected page, then clear your cache and recheck the page source.

If one page works after redeploying but others do not, note the page URLs. This helps our team investigate faster.

๐Ÿ“Œ Should You Select the Indexing Option?

The indexing option is optional. It is meant to help search engines notice your updated pages sooner. It does not decide whether a title is applied on your website.

  • Use it if you want search engines to recrawl the page and pick up the new title faster.
  • Skip it if you are still testing or have not confirmed that the live title is correct.

Verify the title in the page source first, then request indexing. Otherwise, search engines may pick up an outdated or conflicting title.

โฑ๏ธ How Long Until Search Results Update?

Even after your page shows the correct title, search results can take days or weeks to change. Google may also choose to display a different title than the one you set. If the page source shows the correct title but search results still look old, this is usually a search engine timing issue, not a deployment issue.

๐Ÿ“‹ Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • View the page source and confirm which title is live.
  • Check for duplicate title tags.
  • Clear plugin, CDN, and browser caches.
  • Decide whether OTTO or Yoast controls the title for each page.
  • Match the title in both tools if you use both.
  • Confirm the OTTO deployment is active and redeploy if needed.
  • Use the indexing option after the live title is correct.
