๐ What This Issue Looks Like
You have approved an OTTO suggestion for your homepage H1 (and sometimes the H2). You have recrawled, reprocessed, and redeployed, but the live page still shows the old heading, or the new one never shows up in the page source.
One common cause is a hidden H1 already on the page. Your site may contain an H1 tag that visitors cannot see, and this can stop the new heading from appearing where you expect it.
๐ค Why a Hidden H1 Blocks the Change
Every page should have one main H1 heading. Some themes and page builders add an extra H1 behind the scenes. It can be hidden with styling, or it can sit in a header, logo, slider, or banner area.
When that happens, the following can occur:
- OTTO finds the existing H1 in the page code, which may be the hidden one rather than the one visitors see.
- The new heading is applied to, or conflicts with, an element that is not visible on the page.
- The visible heading on your homepage stays the same, so it looks like nothing changed.
- The page may end up with two H1 tags, which can confuse search engines.
This is why recrawling and redeploying do not help. The problem is the page structure, not the deployment.
๐งช How to Check for a Hidden H1
You can confirm this in a few minutes with your web browser.
- Open your homepage in a browser such as Chrome.
- Right-click anywhere on the page and choose View Page Source.
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) and search for <h1.
- Count how many H1 tags appear and read the text inside each one.
- Compare them with the main heading you see on the page.
For a more precise check, right-click the heading on your page and choose Inspect. Then search the code for H1 tags in the Elements panel.
You likely have a hidden H1 if you see any of these:
- An H1 whose text does not match anything visible on your homepage.
- An H1 inside a logo, menu, slider, or header section.
- An H1 with styling that hides it, such as display none or a tiny font size.
- More than one H1 on the page.
๐ ๏ธ How to Fix It
The goal is to leave one visible H1 on the homepage. Choose the option that fits how your site is built.
- Remove the hidden H1. In your theme, page builder, or editor, find the hidden heading and delete it. Many builders let you set the heading level on each element.
- Change its heading level. If you want to keep the text, change its tag from H1 to a paragraph or a lower heading such as H2 or H3.
- Make the visible heading the H1. If your visible headline is currently an H2 or styled text, set it to H1 in your editor so it is the only H1 on the page.
- Check theme and plugin settings. Some themes add an H1 to the logo or site title on the homepage. Look for a setting that changes this.
- Clear your caches. Clear any caching plugin, hosting cache, or CDN cache so the updated page is served.
If you are not sure which element is the hidden H1, share the page with your web developer. Ask them to make sure the homepage has only one visible H1.
๐ Re-Apply the OTTO Suggestion
After you have fixed the page structure, let OTTO pick up the changes.
- Open your project in Search Atlas and go to OTTO SEO.
- Find the homepage H1 (and H2) suggestion.
- Trigger a fresh crawl or reprocess of the homepage.
- Review the suggestion and deploy it again.
- Wait a few minutes, then reload your homepage in a private or incognito window.
โ How to Confirm It Worked
- View the page source and search for <h1. You should find exactly one H1 with the new text.
- Check that the heading is visible on the page and matches the suggestion.
- If you also deployed an H2, confirm it appears in the page source.
- Test in an incognito window to rule out your own browser cache.
๐ก Other Things That Can Delay Changes
If you have only one H1 and the heading still has not changed, check these points:
- Caching: Your site, hosting, or CDN may still serve an older version of the page.
- Page builder content: Some builders load headings with JavaScript after the page opens. Check that the heading is present in the page source.
- Several homepage versions: Check that the URL OTTO is working on matches your live homepage, including www or non-www and the trailing slash.
- Deployment status: Confirm the change shows as deployed in OTTO and not as pending.
๐งญ Best Practices Going Forward
- Use only one H1 per page, and make sure visitors can see it.
- Keep your H1 consistent with the page topic and main keyword.
- Recheck your page source after changing themes, plugins, or page builders.
- Clear your caches after every major page change.
