🔍 What This Note Means
When Content Genius builds an article, it can run an automated step that looks for pages on your site, such as service pages, to link to from the new content. If you see the note "the service-page internal linking came back empty from the automated tool", that step finished but found no link suggestions to return.
This is an informational note, not a crash. Your article was still generated, but no service-page links were inserted automatically.
🤔 Why It Happens
The automated step needs a list of suitable pages to link to. It usually comes back empty for one of these reasons:
- No pages available: the Brand Vault has no hostname, or it has no curated links, no published Content Genius pages, and no top pages, and the site has not been crawled into the index the tool searches, so there are no pages to choose from.
- Service pages are hard to find: the crawl skipped them because they are blocked by robots.txt or noindex, redirect to another canonical URL, are not a normal indexable HTML page, or sit on a low-value path such as a category, tag, author, privacy, terms, login, or registration page.
- No close topic match: The article topic is too far from your service pages, so nothing is relevant enough to suggest.
- Unclear page details: pages with no summary, meta description, title, tags, or stored keywords give the matcher very little text to compare with the article, so a relevant page is less likely to be chosen. A missing title alone does not remove the page.
- Temporary tool issue: The automated tool did not return results on that run, even though your setup is fine.
✅ Quick Checks Before You Re-Run
- Confirm the Brand Vault hostname is the correct site domain, with no typo and without a protocol, www, or path that would make it fail to match the crawled site.
- Open your main service pages in a private browser window. They should load publicly without a login.
- Make sure each service page is published and not set to noindex or blocked from crawling.
- Check that the service pages are linked from your menu, footer, or other pages on your site.
- Review each service page title and main heading. They should clearly describe the service, such as "Emergency Plumbing in Austin" instead of just "Services".
🔄 How to Try Again
- After you publish or unblock pages, wait until the site crawl finishes and the crawled pages are indexed. Until that completes, the tool is still using the previous crawl.
- Open the finished article in Content Genius and generate it again, or in the article editor ask the assistant to add internal links. You can also use the Add internal links suggestion. There is no separate control to regenerate only the linking section.
- Make sure the article topic relates to at least one of your services. A closely related topic gives the tool something to match.
- Open the new article and look for links to your own pages. If they are there, suggestions were found and added. If they are not, generation still finished; use Add internal links, or follow Improve your link suggestions if that message is shown.
✍️ Add Service-Page Links Manually
If you need the article published now, you can add the links yourself in a few minutes:
- Pick one to three service pages that fit the article topic.
- Choose natural phrases in the text, such as the service name, to use as link text.
- Avoid vague anchor text like "click here". Descriptive wording helps readers and search engines.
- Link only where it genuinely helps the reader, and avoid repeating the same link many times.
💡 Tips to Prevent It in Future
- Keep your site connected and your service pages published and easy to reach.
- Use clear, specific titles and headings on every service page.
- Write articles that support your services, so there is a natural place to link.
- Re-run generation after adding new service pages, so they can be considered.
