❓ The Short Answer
If you want OTTO's optimizations stored in your site, use OTTO Persistence. It copies the change types you turn on into your CMS so they can remain after you stop using OTTO. It is off until you enable it, and it applies to change types, not to individual pages.
🧩 How OTTO Applies Changes by Default
By default, OTTO applies optimizations through a lightweight script on your site. When a page loads, the script adds the improvements, such as updated titles, meta descriptions, headings, or schema. This makes changes fast to deploy and easy to adjust, and you don't need to edit your CMS by hand.
The trade-off is that these changes depend on OTTO being active. If you remove OTTO or its script, changes that were not synced to your CMS will no longer appear on your pages.
💾 What Sync to CMS Does
OTTO Persistence copies the change types you enable into your site's own fields and SEO-plugin settings. After a successful sync:
- The enabled changes are stored in your site's SEO fields, alongside the values those plugins already keep.
- They appear in your site's source code without relying on the OTTO script.
- They stay in place if you pause or disable OTTO. If you uninstall the plugin, they remain only when Delete data on uninstall is off.
✅ Before You Sync
- Connect your CMS. Your site must be connected to Search Atlas with permission to edit content.
- Review the change types. Persistence saves the values OTTO is currently deploying for each type you enable, so enable only what you want to keep.
- Back up your site. A backup or restore point lets you undo changes if needed.
- Check supported changes. Which change types can be synced may vary by CMS and by page. The Sync to CMS option in your project shows what is available for your site.
🛠️ How to Sync Changes to Your CMS
- Open the site's OTTO project in Search Atlas, or the MetaSync settings in WordPress.
- Review the optimizations applied to your pages and make sure they are what you want on your site.
- Enable OTTO Persistence for each change type you want to keep.
- Choose the change types to write to your CMS. The sync applies each enabled type across the site, not to selected pages.
- Confirm the sync and wait for it to finish.
The layout differs by CMS, but the flow is the same: review the change types, enable OTTO Persistence for the ones you want, and save.
🔍 How to Confirm the Changes Are Permanent
- Open a synced page on your live site.
- View the page source (right-click and choose View Page Source) or check the page in your CMS editor.
- Look for the updated title, meta description, headings, or other elements you synced.
- If the content is there and your CMS shows it as part of the page, the change is saved on your site.
Your site may use caching. If you don't see the update right away, clear your site cache and check again.
⚠️ Important Things to Know
- Sync before you stop using OTTO. Don't remove OTTO or cancel until you have confirmed your changes are saved in your CMS.
- New changes need a new sync. Optimizations OTTO makes after your sync are not saved to your CMS until you sync again.
- Some changes may not be supported. If a particular change type can't be synced for your CMS, it will keep depending on OTTO. Ask our team if you're unsure about a specific item.
- Manual edits can overlap. If you or a plugin edit the same fields later, the newest edit may overwrite the earlier one.
🧯 Troubleshooting
- Sync option is unavailable: Check that your CMS is connected and that the connection has permission to edit content.
- Changes don't show after syncing: Clear your site and browser cache, then check the page source again.
- Some changes are missing: The change type may not be supported for your CMS, or it may not have been selected during the sync. Try syncing again and check the selection.
- Your SEO plugin shows different values: Another plugin or theme setting may be overriding the synced content. Check those settings for the same page.
