🛠️ Fixing the OTTO Wrong UUID Status

Last updated on Oct 29, 2026

🔍 What Does the Wrong UUID Status Mean?

Each OTTO project has a UUID, a unique ID made up of letters and numbers. OTTO uses it to match the installation on your website to the correct project in Search Atlas. A Wrong UUID status means the ID OTTO finds on your website does not match the ID of the project you are viewing.

In short, the mismatch is between your website and your OTTO project.

❓ Whose UUID Is It?

This is the most common question, so here is a plain answer:

  • It is not a Google UUID. It has nothing to do with your Google account, Google Search Console, or Google Analytics connection.
  • It is the OTTO project UUID that Search Atlas generates for each project.
  • The status appears when the UUID in the OTTO installation on the website differs from the UUID of the project in your dashboard.

🧩 Why Does This Happen?

These are the most common causes:

  • Wrong project's code installed. The OTTO script or snippet was copied from a different project, often when you manage several clients or sites.
  • Old code left behind. A previous OTTO installation, such as one from a past project or a test, is still active on the site.
  • Duplicate installations. The code was added in more than one place, for example in a plugin and also in the theme header. If every copy uses a UUID from a different project, the status is Wrong UUID. If one copy uses this project's UUID, the status is Duplicate Installation instead.
  • Project recreated. The project was deleted and re-added, so the old UUID no longer matches. Moving the project to a different domain does not change its UUID.
  • Cached pages. A caching plugin, CDN, or hosting cache is still serving an older version of the page with the old code.

✅ How to Fix the Wrong UUID Status

  1. Open the OTTO project for the affected website in Search Atlas. Make sure you are in the correct project and domain.
  2. Go to the OTTO installation instructions and copy the code or UUID shown for that project.
  3. Check your website for the OTTO code in your plugin settings, theme header, tag manager, or any other place where scripts are added.
  4. Compare the UUID on your site to the one in the project. If they differ, replace the old code with the correct one.
  5. Remove duplicates. Keep only one OTTO installation on the site.
  6. Clear all caches, including your website plugin, hosting, and CDN caches.
  7. Return to the OTTO project and run Scan in the installation guide, or choose Check again on the connection status. The scan can take a few minutes, and a recently fixed status can take up to 2 minutes to update.

👥 Tips for Agencies Managing Multiple Clients

  • Always confirm the project name and domain before copying installation code.
  • Keep a simple record of each client's domain and its OTTO project.
  • Do not reuse installation code from one client's site on another.
  • When migrating a site or changing domains, re-check the OTTO installation afterward.

📄 What About Content Genius Document Uploads?

Content Genius document uploads are a separate feature from the OTTO installation. If you see a UUID-related message while uploading or opening a document, the document may be linked to a different project or site than the one you are working in. Try these steps:

  • Confirm you are in the correct project or account.
  • Refresh the page and sign out and back in if needed.
  • Re-open Content Genius from the correct project and try the upload again.
  • Check that the file is in a supported format and is not corrupted.

If the message persists, take a screenshot of it, including the project name, so our team can review it faster.

💡 How to Prevent It in the Future

  • Install OTTO only once per website.
  • Remove old OTTO code before adding a new installation.
  • Clear caches after any change to your site's scripts.
  • Avoid deleting and recreating a project unless necessary, since this generates a new UUID.

💬 Still Seeing the Error?

If the status does not clear after following these steps, gather the project name, the website URL, and a screenshot of the status message.
