๐ What a UUID Mismatch Means
When you install OTTO SEO on Shopify, the OTTO pixel (a small code snippet) must be added to your store. During verification, Search Atlas checks your live website for this snippet and confirms that the UUID in the code matches the UUID of your OTTO project.
A "UUID mismatch" means the platform found an OTTO snippet or tag on your site, but with a different UUID than the one expected for your project. The cause is usually something small, such as an old snippet from another project, a typo, or a cached copy of your site.
โ ๏ธ Common Causes
- The snippet was pasted into a theme that is not published (for example, a duplicate or draft theme).
- An older OTTO snippet from another project or a previous attempt is still in the theme.
- The UUID has extra spaces, missing characters, or was copied from the wrong project.
- The snippet was added to the wrong file or the wrong place in the file.
- A cache (Cloudflare, Shopify, or your browser) is serving an outdated version of your site.
- The project in Search Atlas is linked to a different domain version (for example, www vs. non-www).
- Your store is password-protected, so the verification check cannot see your pages.
โ Step 1: Confirm the Correct UUID
- Log in to Search Atlas and open the OTTO project for your domain.
- Open the OTTO installation instructions and copy the pixel snippet again. Copy the full snippet instead of typing the UUID by hand.
- Check that the project's domain matches the exact store address you are verifying, including www or non-www.
If you manage more than one site, make sure you are not copying a snippet from a different project. This is one of the most common reasons for a mismatch.
๐งน Step 2: Remove Old or Duplicate Snippets
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes.
- On your live (published) theme, click the three-dot menu and choose Edit code.
- Open layout/theme.liquid.
- Use the search function (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) to look for "OTTO" or for the UUID you were using before.
- Delete any old or duplicate OTTO snippets. Only one OTTO snippet should remain.
Also check any custom theme files or apps that inject scripts into your store. Some of them may add an older copy of the pixel.
๐ Step 3: Add the Snippet to the Live Theme
- Still in layout/theme.liquid, find the opening head tag near the top of the file.
- Paste the OTTO snippet on a new line directly after the opening head tag.
- Click Save.
Make sure you are editing the theme marked as Current theme. Changes made to an unpublished theme do not appear on your live store and will fail verification.
๐ Step 4: Clear Every Layer of Cache
Clearing Cloudflare is a good first step, but it is not always enough. Work through these:
- Cloudflare: Use Purge Everything in the Caching section instead of purging a single file. Wait a minute or two afterward.
- Cloudflare optimizations: Temporarily turn off features that rewrite or delay scripts, such as Rocket Loader, Auto Minify, or Mirage. These can change or hide the pixel from the verification check.
- Browser: Open your store in a private or incognito window.
- Apps and page builders: If you use a speed optimization app, clear its cache too.
๐ Step 5: Check What Your Live Site Shows
This step confirms whether the correct UUID is really visible to the outside world.
- Open your store's home page in an incognito window.
- Right-click the page and choose View page source.
- Search for "OTTO" or for your UUID.
- Compare the UUID in the page source with the UUID shown in your Search Atlas project, character by character.
What you see tells you what to fix:
- No snippet found: The snippet is in the wrong theme or file, or a cache is hiding it. Go back to Steps 3 and 4.
- A different UUID: An old snippet is still active. Go back to Step 2.
- The correct UUID: Move on to Step 6 and try verification again.
๐ Step 6: Check Store Access and Domain Settings
- If your Shopify store has a storefront password, turn it off temporarily. Verification cannot read password-protected pages.
- Check that your primary domain in Shopify matches the domain in your OTTO project. If your store redirects from one version to another (for example, non-www to www), use the final destination address.
- If a Cloudflare firewall rule or bot protection is active, make sure it is not blocking automated requests to your home page.
๐ Step 7: Run Verification Again
- Wait 2 to 5 minutes after your last change.
- Return to your OTTO project in Search Atlas.
- Click the verification button again.
Once the check passes, you can turn your Cloudflare optimizations back on. If verification fails again after they are re-enabled, keep Rocket Loader off for your store.
๐ก Quick Tips to Avoid This Issue
- Always copy and paste the snippet. Do not type the UUID by hand.
- Paste the snippet only once, and only in the live theme.
- After switching or updating your Shopify theme, check that the OTTO snippet is still there.
- Purge your Cloudflare cache after every change to your theme code.
๐ฌ Still Not Working?
If verification still fails after these steps, have the following ready so we can help you faster: your store's domain, the UUID shown in your OTTO project, and the UUID you see in your page source.
