🔍 What This Error Means
When you submit a published article to Publication Media, our system visits the live page and checks that it meets two requirements. If either check fails, the submission is rejected, even if the article looks fine in your browser.
A rejection message may look like this: The page the article has been published on has a meta robots tag instructing search engines not to index the page and Missing Target anchor text followed by your keyword and target landing page.
This message reports two separate problems:
- Noindex problem: the page tells search engines not to index it. A page that cannot be indexed will not deliver SEO value, so it cannot be accepted.
- Missing anchor problem: the page does not contain a link that uses the exact target anchor text and points to the exact target landing page.
Both checks must pass before the article is accepted.
🚫 Why the Noindex Check Fails
A noindex instruction is usually a hidden setting, so the page can look perfectly normal to a visitor. Common causes include:
- The site's global setting to discourage search engines from indexing is turned on (common on new or staging sites).
- The individual post or page has a noindex option enabled in an SEO plugin or in the page settings.
- The article is saved as a draft, private, or password-protected page.
- The page category, tag, or template is set to noindex.
- The server sends a noindex instruction in the page headers, which you cannot see on the page itself.
✅ How to Check and Remove the Noindex Tag
- Open the published article in your browser.
- Right-click the page and choose View Page Source.
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) and search for noindex.
- If you find a line like meta name="robots" content="noindex", the page is blocked from indexing.
- Go to your site's admin area and open the article's settings.
- Find the search engine visibility or indexing option in your SEO plugin or page settings and set it to index (allow search engines to show this page).
- Check the site-wide setting too. Make sure search engine visibility is not set to discourage indexing.
- Save or update the page and make sure its status is Published.
If you cannot find a noindex tag in the page source, it may be coming from the server headers or a security or caching tool. Ask whoever manages your hosting to check for an X-Robots-Tag header.
🔗 Why the Anchor Text Check Fails
The system looks for a clickable link on the page that meets both conditions:
- The visible link text matches the target anchor text exactly (for example, do deer eat moonflowers).
- The link points to the exact target landing page shown in the error message.
Typical reasons it is not detected:
- The keyword appears in the article as plain text but is not hyperlinked.
- The anchor text was reworded, shortened, or changed in capitalization or spelling.
- The link goes to a different page, or to a slightly different version of the URL (for example, http instead of https, a missing or extra trailing slash, or added tracking parameters).
- The link was removed when the article was edited or reformatted in your editor.
- The link is added by a script after the page loads, so it is not in the page source.
- An old cached version of the page is being shown without the link.
🧭 How to Fix the Missing Anchor
- Open the error message and copy the exact target anchor text and target landing page URL.
- Edit the published article and find the sentence that contains the keyword.
- Make sure the keyword is typed exactly as shown, with no extra words inside the link.
- Select that text and add a link. Paste the target landing page URL exactly as shown.
- Update the page, then open it in a private browser window and click the link to confirm it goes to the right page.
- Open View Page Source and search for the anchor text to confirm the link appears in the page code.
♻️ Clear Your Cache Before Resubmitting
After you fix either problem, the live page may still show the old version to our system. This is a common reason an article is rejected again even though it was corrected.
- Clear the cache in your website's caching plugin, if you use one.
- Clear any CDN or hosting cache.
- Wait a few minutes, then reload the page in a private browser window to confirm your changes are live.
🚀 Resubmit Your Article
- Confirm the page is published and publicly accessible without a login.
- Confirm there is no noindex tag in the page source.
- Confirm the exact anchor text links to the exact target landing page.
- Return to Publication Media and submit the article URL again.
💡 Quick Checklist
- The page status is Published, not draft or private.
- Search engine visibility is allowed for the site and for this page.
- No noindex appears in the page source.
- The anchor text matches the target exactly.
- The link goes to the exact target landing page URL.
- The cache has been cleared.
