## **📌 What Is an OTTO UUID?**

A UUID is a unique ID that links your website to your OTTO project in Search Atlas. It is a long string of letters and numbers separated by dashes, for example: **xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx**.

Every OTTO project has its own UUID. If the UUID on your Shopify store does not match the one for that project, Search Atlas cannot verify the install. It shows "Wrong UUID" or "Your script is using the wrong UUID," and in the newer install flow it says it found an old OTTO code that belongs to another project.

## **⚠️ Why You See the Wrong UUID Error**

This error usually has a simple cause. The most common ones are:

- **Copied from the wrong project:** If you manage more than one website or store, you may have copied the UUID from a different OTTO project.
- **Copied from an old install:** You may have reused a UUID from a previous setup, a test project, or a deleted project.
- **Extra spaces or missing characters:** A space at the start or end, or a missing character, makes the UUID invalid.
- Different store domain: Creating the OTTO project for a different domain than your Shopify store, such as a myshopify.com address instead of your live custom domain, does not by itself make the UUID wrong. The UUID must still match this project. A script hosted on the wrong Search Atlas or white-label domain is reported separately as "Wrong Domain."
- **Old code left in place:** A previous OTTO snippet is still in your theme alongside the new one.

## **🔍 How to Find Your Correct UUID**

1. Log in to your Search Atlas account.
2. Open **OTTO SEO** and select the project for the Shopify store you want to install on. Check that the project name and domain match your store exactly.
3. Open the install or setup instructions for that project and choose **Shopify** as your platform.
4. Find the UUID shown in the install instructions or in the install code for that project.
5. Use the copy button to copy the full OTTO script shown for that project. If you copy the UUID out of it by hand, select the whole string with no spaces before or after it.

**Tip:** Always copy the UUID directly from the project you are installing on. Do not reuse one from an email, a note, or another store.

## **🛠️ How to Install the UUID on Shopify**

Follow the install instructions shown in your OTTO project. If they ask you to add the OTTO code to your Shopify theme, these are the general steps:

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store** and then **Themes**.
2. Next to your live theme, click the three-dot menu and choose **Edit code**.
3. Open the theme file your OTTO instructions point to (usually the main theme layout file).
4. Check whether an older OTTO snippet is already there. If so, remove it so only one OTTO snippet remains.
5. Paste the new code exactly as shown in your project, with your correct UUID inside it.
6. Click **Save**.

Make sure you are editing your **live** theme. If the code is in an unpublished or duplicate theme, OTTO will not detect it on your store.

## **✅ How to Check That the UUID Is Correct**

- Compare the UUID in your Shopify theme with the UUID in your OTTO project, character by character, or paste both into a text editor to compare them side by side.
- Confirm there are no leading or trailing spaces and no extra quotation marks or characters.
- Confirm the OTTO project domain matches the store domain customers see.
- Return to the OTTO install page and run the install check again. Allow a few minutes after saving, as changes may take time to appear.

## **🔄 If You Manage Multiple Stores**

Each store needs its own OTTO project and its own UUID. Never use one store's UUID on another store. Before you install, double-check the project name and domain at the top of the install page, and keep a simple list of which UUID belongs to which store.

## **🧰 Still Seeing the Error?**

Work through this quick checklist:

- Did you copy the UUID from the correct project?
- Is the code saved in your live Shopify theme?
- Is there only one OTTO snippet in the theme?
- Does the UUID have no extra spaces or missing characters?
- Have you waited a few minutes and cleared your browser cache before rechecking?

If you have checked all of these and the error remains, it may be a mismatch we need to look at on our side, such as a project created under a different domain.
