If you try to connect your Shopify store to Search Atlas and see an error such as "token exchange failed" or "404 store unavailable", the cause is almost always in the Shopify app setup, not in Search Atlas. This article shows what to check.

## What does a 404 token exchange error mean?

When you connect Shopify with a client ID and client secret, Search Atlas asks Shopify for an access token for your store. Shopify answers with a 404 when it cannot find the app on that store, or when the client ID does not match the app. This is not a routing problem on the Search Atlas side.

## How do I fix a 404 token exchange error?

1. In your Shopify admin, open the custom app you created and confirm it is installed on the exact store you are connecting. Installing the app is a manual step in Shopify, and an app that exists but is not installed on that store will fail.
2. Check the shop domain you entered in Search Atlas. It must be the store where the app is installed.
3. Compare the Client ID in Search Atlas with the Client ID shown in your Shopify app. Re-enter it if there is any difference.
4. Save the connector again in Search Atlas under **Settings**, in the **CMS Connectors** tab.

## What access permissions does the Shopify app need?

If you connect with an Admin API access token instead of client credentials, the token must come from an app with the **read_content** and **write_content** access scopes.

## What if the error continues?

Reach our team through live chat. Please send a screenshot of the error, a screenshot of your Shopify app's API access scopes, and the shop domain you are connecting. This lets the team check the connection quickly.
