## **🧭 Overview**

You've deployed updated meta tags through OTTO SEO, confirmed the changes are live on the page, and Google has even re-crawled the page — but the new meta tags still aren't showing in actual search results. This is a common and frustrating experience. The good news is that it's almost always a timing or caching issue, not a problem with your deployment.

## **⚙️ How Google Updates Search Snippets**

There is an important distinction between **crawling** and **indexing**. When Google crawls your page, it reads and stores the raw content. When it **indexes** your page, it processes that content and decides what to display in search results. These are two separate steps and can happen hours or even days apart.

- **Crawl confirmed:** Google visited and read your page.
- **Index updated:** Google has processed the crawl data and refreshed what appears in search results.
- **SERP snippet refreshed:** The visible title and description in search results have been updated — this step can lag behind the others.

A confirmed crawl does not guarantee that the search snippet will update immediately. Google's systems prioritise and schedule index updates independently of crawl events.

## **⏱️ Expected Timelines**

Meta tag changes typically take between **a few days and several weeks** to fully reflect in search results, depending on your site's crawl frequency, domain authority, and how competitive the keyword landscape is. Even after a successful re-crawl, snippets can take additional time to refresh in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

- **High-authority, frequently crawled sites:** may see updates sooner
- **Newer or lower-traffic sites:** may wait longer for changes to appear
- **Highly competitive queries:** Google may override your meta description with its own generated snippet regardless of your tags

## **✅ How to Verify Your Deployment Is Working Correctly**

Before assuming something is broken, confirm that the meta tag changes are correctly live on the page:

1. View the source of your page in a browser and search for the meta title and description tags to confirm the updated values are present in the HTML.
2. Run the page through **Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool** and use the live URL test. If the meta tags appear correctly there, the deployment is working — Google simply hasn't refreshed the SERP snippet yet.
3. Optionally verify with a browser extension such as SEOquake or a meta tag checker tool to confirm the tags are live in the page's HTML.

If all of the above confirm the correct tags are present, the deployment is successful. The delay is entirely on Google's side.

## **🛠️ Steps to Speed Up Google's Snippet Refresh**

While you cannot force Google to update its snippets on demand, the following steps may help prompt a faster refresh:

- Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to request indexing for the affected page.
- Ensure your sitemap is up to date and submitted in Google Search Console.
- Build or refresh internal links pointing to the updated page to signal its importance.
- Monitor Google Search Console over the following days and weeks for index status changes.

If your meta tags are confirmed live in the page HTML but the SERP snippet has not updated after several weeks, this is worth escalating so our team can review the deployment on your project. When reaching out, please have the following ready: the affected page URL, a screenshot or copy of the current HTML meta tags, and the date OTTO deployed the changes.
