# **🧭 Overview**

When reviewing your OTTO audit results, you may notice flags for **Multiple Meta Descriptions** or **Too Many External Links** — even when your page source clearly shows only one meta description and no manually added external links. These are known false-positive scenarios caused by how OTTO's crawler reads your page at the time of the audit. This article explains why they occur and what to expect.

# **🤔 Why Does This Happen?**

OTTO's audit engine crawls your live page and parses all rendered HTML, including content injected by third-party scripts, tag managers, or plugins. This means that even if you have only one meta description in your source code, another one may be temporarily inserted by:

- **Google Tag Manager (GTM)** or other tag management systems firing meta tags dynamically
- **SEO plugins** (e.g. Yoast, Rank Math) that output duplicate tags during certain page states
- **A/B testing tools** or personalisation scripts that inject additional head elements
- **Caching layers** serving a stale or partial version of your page at crawl time

Similarly, **Too Many External Links** flags can be triggered by dynamically loaded widgets, social embeds, ad scripts, or footer/header includes that add outbound links to the rendered DOM — none of which you added manually to your page content.

# **🔎 How to Investigate the Flag**

1. Go to **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → Site Audit → Page Explorer** and search for the flagged URL.
2. Open the page details and review the **meta tags** and **links** sections to see exactly what OTTO detected at crawl time.
3. Compare this against your raw HTML source (right-click the live page → View Page Source) to identify any discrepancies.
4. Check for active GTM tags, SEO plugins, or third-party scripts that may be injecting extra meta tags or links into the rendered page.
5. If you identify a script or plugin as the cause, disable or reconfigure it, then trigger a fresh crawl (see next section).

# **🔄 Will These Flags Clear After the Next Crawl?**

Yes — in most cases, once the underlying cause is resolved, the flags will clear automatically after OTTO re-crawls the affected page. To trigger a fresh crawl and re-evaluate the flags:

1. Navigate to **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites** and select your project card.
2. Open the **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → Site Audit → Crawl Monitoring** section for your site.
3. Initiate a new crawl for the affected URL or run a full site re-crawl.
4. Once the crawl completes, return to **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → Overview** or **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites (SEO Automation) → Select your project → Tasks** to confirm the flags have been resolved.

If the root cause (e.g. a misconfigured plugin or tag) has not been removed, the flags will reappear after each crawl. Make sure to address the source of the duplicate tags or injected links before re-crawling.

# **✅ Quick Checklist to Resolve False Positives**

- Audit active GTM container tags for any that write to the **<head>** section
- Check your CMS SEO plugin settings for duplicate meta description outputs
- Review third-party widgets and social embeds that may add external links to the rendered DOM
- Clear your site's cache before triggering a new OTTO crawl
- Use your browser's **Inspect Element** (not View Source) to check the fully rendered DOM for duplicate tags
- After fixes are applied, re-crawl via **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → Site Audit → Crawl Monitoring** and verify results in **Left sidebar → OTTO SEO → All Sites (SEO Automation) → Select your project → Tasks**

# **Additional Notes**

Flags clear automatically on the next scheduled weekly analysis. Triggering a manual recrawl does NOT refresh Site Audit flags — it updates other data points but does not re-run the full audit analysis. Only the weekly analysis cycle clears these flags.
