# **🧭 Overview**

When OTTO audits your site, you may notice that the number of pages flagged for missing meta descriptions is lower than the total number of pages crawled for title tags. This is expected behaviour, not a bug or a crawl limit issue. This article explains exactly why the counts differ and where your pages go after OTTO processes them.

# **⚙️ How OTTO Detects Missing Meta Descriptions**

OTTO crawls your site and checks every eligible page for a meta description. When it detects a page with a missing or empty meta description, it does two things in sequence:

1. It flags the page as needing a meta description.
2. It automatically generates an AI-powered meta description suggestion for that page.

Once the AI suggestion is generated, the page is **moved out of the main flagged issues list** and into a separate task queue called **Meta Description Replacements**. This is an intentional part of OTTO's workflow — it signals that the page no longer needs detection attention because a suggested fix is already waiting for your review.

# **📋 Understanding the Two Separate Queues**

It helps to think of OTTO's meta description workflow as two distinct stages:

- **Flagged Issues queue:** Pages where a missing meta description has been detected but an AI suggestion has not yet been generated. The count here reflects pages still awaiting processing.
- **Meta Description Replacements queue:** Pages where OTTO has already generated an AI meta description suggestion and the change is ready for you to approve or edit. These pages are no longer shown in the main flagged count.

This is why your flagged count (for example, 136 pages) appears lower than the total crawled count (for example, 220 pages). The remaining pages have already progressed to the Replacements queue — they are not missing from detection.

# **🔢 Why the Counts Differ from Title Tag Crawls**

Title tag audits and meta description audits run as separate checks within OTTO. Each check has its own flagging logic, queue, and processing state. A page crawled for title tags is counted independently from a page processed for meta descriptions. The two numbers are not expected to match, and a difference between them does not indicate a crawl limit problem or a missed detection.

If you crawled 220 pages for title tags and only 136 appear flagged for missing meta descriptions, the most likely explanations are:

- Some of the 220 pages already have valid meta descriptions and were never flagged.
- Some flagged pages have already had AI suggestions generated and moved to the **Meta Description Replacements** queue.
- A small number of pages may have been excluded based on page type or crawl rules you have configured.

# **🗂️ How to Find Pages in the Meta Description Replacements Queue**

To review all pages where OTTO has generated AI meta description suggestions, follow these steps:

1. In the left sidebar, click **OTTO SEO**, then open **All Sites (SEO Automation)**.
2. Locate the **Meta Description Replacements** task section within your active OTTO project.
3. Review each suggestion. You can approve, edit, or dismiss individual recommendations before they are deployed to your site.

Pages in this queue are fully tracked and actioned — they have not been lost or skipped.

# **✅ What to Do If You Believe Pages Are Genuinely Missing**

If after checking both queues you still believe specific pages with missing meta descriptions are not being detected, consider the following:

- **Check your crawl scope:** Confirm that the pages in question fall within the URLs included in your OTTO project crawl settings.
- **Re-run the crawl:** Trigger a fresh crawl from your OTTO project settings to capture any recently published or updated pages.
- **Check page indexability:** Pages blocked by robots.txt, set to noindex, or excluded via crawl filters will not be audited by OTTO.
- **Review crawl page limits:** If your plan has a crawl page cap and your site exceeds it, some pages may not be reached. You can review your current limit inside the OTTO project settings.

# **📌 Key Takeaway**

A lower flagged count does not mean OTTO missed your pages. Pages with missing meta descriptions that have received an AI suggestion are intentionally moved to the **Meta Description Replacements** queue. Always check both the flagged issues list and the Replacements queue together to get a complete picture of your meta description coverage.
